The Cheltenham Festival: A Billion-Pound Betting Bonanza
The Greatest Show on Turf is back, and the Cheltenham Festival promises to be a roaring success once again.
During the four days of horse racing, a staggering 220,000 pints of Guinness will be consumed, and over £1 BILLION will be wagered.
The Cheltenham Festival: A Billion-Pound Betting Bonanza. This year, the 274,000 attendees, capped at 68,500 per day, will be able to pull their pints for the first time, although they will cost a painful £7.50 each.
The Jockey Club’s formal dress code has been abolished, allowing racegoers to wear whatever they please. However, thousands of racegoers will continue to dress to impress, especially on Wednesday’s Lady’s Day.
And as the racing world descends on Gloucestershire town for this legendary week of racing, there will be some anxious fans, trainers, and jockeys keeping a keen eye on the weather forecast.
With rain and wind forecasted for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the outlook is not particularly favorable.
However, a significantly nicer day is predicted for Friday’s golden crescendo.
We can only hope that 2008 will not be repeated when high winds forced the cancellation of the races.
So what can we anticipate from the Cheltenham Festival in 2023?
TUESDAY
Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle begins at 1.30 p.m. on the first day of the most prestigious four days of horse racing.
The renowned duo of Paul Townend and Willie Mullins are joined by Facile Vega.

The most important race of the day, however, is the 2m12f Champion Hurdle, which begins at 3.30 p.m.
Under the guidance of Nico de Boinville, Constitution Hill will likely be the heavy favorite.
Following that is the Mares Hurdle, which could be Honeysuckle’s final race.
WEDNESDAY
The Champion Chase is the highlight of Day Two on WEDNESDAY, with Energumene hoping to defend his title from 2022.
With entrants confirmed 48 hours in advance, he will be the second favorite in the contest against Edwardstone.
Whoever rides Energumene will wear the famous blue-and-white stripes, which are synonymous with Energumene’s owner and Brighton’s chief executive, Tony Bloom.
Poker enthusiast and maths genius Bloom, dubbed “the smartest man to ever place a bet,” has already placed a £30,000 wager on his horse to win the Champion Chase.
Sir Alex Ferguson is especially interested in the 1.30 p.m. Ballymore Novice Hurdle.
Hermes Allen of the former Manchester United manager should start as one of the favorites.
Hermes Allen is one of three Fergie horses that will compete against some of the best horses in the UK and Ireland this week, and he has the best chance of winning.
THURSDAY
Two words: St. Patrick’s Day
Yes, March 17 is a Friday, but according to Cheltenham tradition, St. Patrick’s Day is observed on Thursday.
The Irish travel to Britain in their thousands with their sights set on a few pints of Guinness and cheering their trainers to victory.
On Thursday, fan-favorite Shishkin will compete for Nicky Henderson in the Ryanair Chase at 2:50 p.m., while the Stayers’ Hurdle at 3.30 p.m. offers the largest purse.
However, all eyes will be on the 2.10 p.m. Pertemps Handicap Hurdle.
Steal A March, one of the horses owned by King Charles III and the Queen Consort, was eligible to compete.
And the royal family could even make an appearance at Prestbury Park to view the performance of their eight-year-old bay gelding.
At 4.50 pm, the name of the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle will be changed to the Jack de Bromhead Memorial Hurdle in his honor.
In September of last year, the 13-year-old son of legendary trainer Henry died tragically in a pony racing accident.
FRIDAY
Last but certainly not least is Friday, also known as Gold Cup Day.
At 3.30 p.m., the most prestigious National Hunt race, the epic 3m212f steeplechase, will take place. The sporting world will pause for seven minutes to witness this event.
A Plus Tard was victorious in 2022, but Galopin Des Champs will attempt to exorcise the demons of last year’s infamous defeat by claiming victory this year.
Bravemansgame is also in the running, and Sir Alex’s Protektorat will be hoping to win the £351,688 prize and join the likes of Arkle, Best Mate, Kauto Star, and Al Boum Photo on the list of Gold Cup champions.
It is a fitting conclusion to four days of exhilarating competition, as it is a truly spectacular spectacle, with a trophy to match.
