The Azimio Letter: Inside the Battle to Save the Bipartisan Team from Dissolution

On the evening of Tuesday, May 30, the Azimio Coalition made frantic efforts to prevent the dissolution of the joint parliamentary bipartisan team.

A letter seen by GossipA2Z.com, signed by the bipartisan team co-chairman Otiende Amollo, expressed concern for the future of the committee.

Otiende indicated that the opposition would not push for the dissolution of the bipartisan team, despite Azimio’s ultimatum to Kenya Kwanza regarding the opposition’s request.

Despite Azimio’s suspension of the talks, the accommodating stance provided a lifeline.

The Rarieda member of parliament stated, “We will not issue a Notice of Dissolution under clause 38 of the Framework Agreement until you respond to the foregoing.”

As witnessed during the meeting of the Azimio Parliamentary Group, Otiende deviated from the usual threats directed at Azimio by requesting Kenya Kwanza to heed their requests.

The letter, addressed to George Murugara, co-chairman of the bipartisan committee, requested that Kenya Kwanza consider Azimio’s demands regarding the cost of living, the budget bill, and State interference in Jubilee Party affairs.

“Kindly find enclosed for your signature two letters addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Chairperson of the IEBC Selection Panel.

“Kindly also find enclosed the Resolutions of The Azimio Parliamentary Group Meeting held on Tuesday, May 30,” read a portion of the letter.

However, Azimio maintained its earlier ultimatum that Kenya Kwanza had only hours to respond to the raised issues.

“As you can see, the aforementioned resolutions require additional concessions on certain important and urgent matters by Tuesday, May 30 at midnight, and we strongly urge you to consider the same,” Otiende urged Murugara.

Earlier media reports indicated that Azimio agreed to resume negotiations without conditions on May 31.

A member of the bipartisan committee in a position of authority refuted the assertion that the negotiations remained on hold.

“What Azimio has done is give Kenya Kwanza more time to consider their demands,” a trustworthy source told GossipA2Z.com.

Tuesday, May 30th, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala disclosed that the government had disregarded all of the demands.

“The opposition cannot issue ultimatums to the President. “When they failed to hold demonstrations, we saved their face by allowing them to air their grievances in Parliament,” Malala said, adding that Azimio would return to the negotiating table without additional conditions.
