Teachers Issue 15-Day Ultimatum Over Unpaid Salaries, Threatens Strike
The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a 15-day deadline to the government starting January 1, 2025, demanding the payment of December salaries along with all pending arrears from September.
The union insists the government must honor its commitments or face another strike beginning January 15, 2025.
This ultimatum comes after several promises from the government, including a letter from the Ministry of Education, to implement salary increases outlined in the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Despite these assurances, university lecturers were dismayed in December when their salaries were paid without any increments.
This was in direct contradiction to a September directive from Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala, instructing that salaries and the agreed increments be paid.

University officials have defended themselves, stating that they have not received the necessary funds from the government to fulfill the payments.
This has led to growing frustration among UASU members, who feel betrayed by the continued delays.
The union has also demanded the resignation of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, accusing him of failing to ensure the implementation of the salary adjustments.
UASU has warned that if their demands are not met, the upcoming strike will be more intense and disruptive than previous ones.
The union remains firm in its stance, emphasizing the need for the government to take immediate action to avoid further conflict and ensure that lecturers are fairly compensated as agreed.
