Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Dissolves Entire Electricity Board Over Frequent Power Blackouts
In a significant move aimed at addressing the persisting power supply challenges, President Samia Suluhu Hassan took decisive action by dissolving the entire board of the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco) on Thursday.
This decision was triggered by the widespread discontent among Tanzanians over frequent power outages plaguing the nation.
The ongoing power disruptions have stemmed from power rationing measures enforced due to dwindling water levels in dams and the continuous maintenance of power lines, resulting in a substantial deficit of 400 megawatts in Tanzania’s electricity production.
As part of the restructuring, Major General Paul Kisesa Simuli, the chair of the Tanesco board, has been redeployed to serve as Tanzania’s ambassador to Uganda.

Tanzania isn’t the only East African nation grappling with power challenges. Recently, Kenya has also faced nationwide blackouts.
President William Ruto attributed these outages to faulty power lines and assured citizens of ongoing efforts by the government to address and maintain the infrastructure. Notably, these blackouts have significantly impacted critical installations, including the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The regional concerns over electricity supply disruptions have prompted swift actions from leaders, underscoring the vital importance of stable and reliable power infrastructure for both nations’ socio-economic development.
