Kenya’s Opposition Giant ODM Signals Possible Alliance With Ruto Ahead of Next Elections

Kenya’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), one of the country’s most influential opposition parties, has announced plans to enter structured political negotiations with other parties — including the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) — as part of preparations for the next general election.

The decision was reached on Monday, January 12, after a high-level meeting of the ODM Central Committee held in Kilifi County, Kenya. During the meeting, senior party officials assessed the party’s political standing, organisational strength, and long-term electoral strategy within Kenya’s rapidly shifting political environment.

Speaking on behalf of the Central Committee, Oburu Oginga said the party had resolved to actively pursue pre-election alliances as a strategic move to strengthen ODM’s national influence. The leadership believes that structured cooperation with other political formations could play a critical role in shaping Kenya’s next political chapter.

In a significant development, the committee formally authorised the ODM Party Leader to begin talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) — a notable move considering the intense rivalry between the two parties in recent election cycles.

“The Committee meeting expressed the intention to initiate structured negotiations with different political formations, beginning with the United Democratic Alliance. To this end, we have mandated the Party Leader to commence this process,” the statement read.

According to the party, the planned discussions will be carefully organised and guided by shared national interests rather than short-term political convenience. ODM stressed that any engagement would reflect the realities of Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

At the same time, the party announced it would begin nationwide consultations with its members to gather grassroots views before making any final political realignments. These consultations are expected to shape ODM’s ultimate position and will later be presented for approval at a National Delegates Convention, the party’s highest decision-making forum.

Beyond alliance talks, the Central Committee also addressed the implementation of ODM’s 10-Point Agenda, particularly the issue of compensating victims of public protests. Following a court ruling that declared a previously proposed compensation panel unlawful, the party resolved that any future compensation efforts should be handled through the constitutionally recognised Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR).

During a press briefing, questions arose over the absence of key party figures at the meeting. Oburu Oginga dismissed speculation of internal rifts, explaining that ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Otsotsi had sent apologies due to logistical challenges.

Sifuna, known nationally for his outspoken criticism of the current Kenyan government, had previously declared he would rather leave the party than engage politically with President William Ruto. However, his tone reportedly softened following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, after which he indicated a willingness to prioritise party unity and dialogue.

The developments signal a potentially transformative period in Kenyan politics, with possible ripple effects across the wider African political landscape where coalition-building is increasingly shaping governance and elections.

Martha Karua Warns: Ruto’s Government on Borrowed Time After Raila Odinga’s Death

Kenya’s political landscape could be facing major turbulence following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, according to People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua. Speaking to TV47 on December 23, Karua warned that President William Ruto’s administration is at risk of instability without Odinga’s political influence.

“If there is someone heavily bereaved politically, it is Ruto. Without Baba’s presence, he will not get unified support. Even now, he is not so sure that he can make it another year,” Karua said, referring to Odinga by his widely recognized nickname, Baba.

Karua emphasized that Odinga’s absence will have significant implications for the upcoming 2027 General Elections, hinting that the President’s political trajectory was closely tied to his alignment with Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. According to her, potential shifts within ODM could disadvantage Ruto, especially given the ongoing divisions within the party regarding its relationship with the government.

The PLP leader also disclosed her final conversation with Odinga before his death. She said the former Prime Minister admitted feeling uneasy about his ties with Ruto’s administration. “I told him I don’t want an answer today, I’m leaving it with you to think, but he did say he was very uncomfortable,” Karua recalled. She added that she had encouraged Odinga to consider stepping away from the government, even if it meant its collapse.

Beyond electoral predictions, Karua accused President Ruto of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies and criticized the administration for allegedly failing to protect citizens detained in neighbouring countries. She also pointed to the November by-elections as a wake-up call for opposition parties, insisting that these events underscore the need for vigilance in challenging the ruling government.

Karua concluded her interview with a bold statement, asserting that Ruto is likely to serve only one term as president, signaling a potentially dramatic shift in Kenya’s political dynamics in the coming years.

Why Ruto is Flying to Japan for His 14th Trip This Year

President William Ruto will this evening embark on his 14th international trip of the year as he flies to Yokohama, Japan.

According to State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, Ruto will attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), where he is scheduled to meet with several world leaders, including Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

“President William Ruto departs this evening for Yokohama to participate in TICAD 9,” Hussein said in a Monday, August 18 statement.

Kenya currently enjoys its strongest economic ties with Japan, with trade and development cooperation valued at more than Ksh600 billion — the highest for any African country. The trip is therefore aimed at strengthening this relationship by unlocking new opportunities in trade, investment, and development projects.

On the sidelines of the summit, Ruto will hold high-level talks with Prime Minister Ishiba focused on deepening the Kenya-Japan partnership, boosting bilateral trade, and exploring new areas of cooperation. He will also be hosted at the Imperial Palace by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.

At the conference, Ruto is expected to push for stronger African unity and economic integration. He will call for the full implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), removal of trade barriers, and greater Japanese investment in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, logistics, and digital connectivity to link Africa with global markets.

This visit comes shortly after Ruto revealed his upcoming first trip to the United States since President Donald Trump began his second term in February.

“Next month in the U.S., I will meet with the Recording Academy, the organisers of the Grammy Awards, to fast-track plans for setting up world-class music studios in Kenya and to pave the way for hosting an African edition of the Grammy Awards in Nairobi,” Ruto said on Saturday, August 16.

DCP Party’s Request to UN Ahead of President Ruto’s Travel to the US

The Democratic Citizen Party (DCP) has filed a petition with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), asking it to block President William Ruto from addressing the 80th session. The party accuses Ruto of violating key human rights principles.

On Monday, August 18, DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala urged the UN not to allow Ruto to speak, claiming that giving him a platform would legitimize dictatorship and oppress the very people of Kenya—especially the youth and women—who are only fighting for justice and accountability.

“We ask the UN General Assembly to review his eligibility to speak on peace and human rights issues,” Malala said.

He further questioned Ruto’s moral authority to address this year’s UNGA theme, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,” pointing to accusations of human rights abuses under his administration.

Malala challenged Ruto directly, asking:

“Mr. Ruto, what will you tell the UN this year in line with its principles? Will it be about extrajudicial killings, abductions, forced disappearances, corruption, illegal gold trade, or suppression of protests?”

The DCP accused the government of silencing peaceful demonstrations, intimidating journalists, and violating the very principles the UN was built on.

Malala also called on the United States and the international community to take tough action against Ruto. He urged the U.S., as host of the UNGA, to consider declaring him persona non grata and to boycott his international engagements.

The petition comes as President Ruto prepares to attend the UNGA session in New York, which begins on September 9, 2025.

During last year’s UNGA, Ruto pushed for radical reforms in global governance and financial systems. He argued that the current system was failing developing nations and unable to respond effectively to global economic shocks.

“The multilateral system is struggling to manage today’s complex challenges,” Ruto said then, warning that the global economy risks losing progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The young man who went viral for fearlessly confronting President William Ruto during the International Youth Day celebrations in Kakamega on August 12 has finally revealed details of what happened after his bold move.

Jevin Oyoo, who became an online sensation, earned praise from many Kenyans for directly asking the President to support struggling NGOs in his region.

Speaking in a recent TV interview, Jevin opened up about the dramatic events that followed his viral moment—including ignoring two personal calls from President Ruto himself.

According to Jevin, he first met the Head of State shortly after his speech and was surprised when Ruto personally gave him his phone number.

“I actually spoke to the President behind the tent. For me, it was historic—I’m the first in my family to ever have that chance. He told me to take down his number and promised to talk to me later,” Jevin said.

However, Jevin’s colleagues, who had travelled with him from Uasin Gishu to Kakamega, were left disappointed that the exchange ended with just a contact swap and no direct promises.

Days later, the unexpected happened—Ruto personally called Jevin.

“To my shock, he called me. I didn’t pick the first two times because I thought it was his PA trying to intimidate me. Then he texted ‘Hello’. That’s when I called back, and he answered,” Jevin explained.

When Ruto asked him what he wanted, Jevin said he felt the pressure to represent not only himself but also the youth he works with.

He told the President about a community project in Uasin Gishu that is currently empowering more than 50 young people, but struggling to access grants. Jevin urged Ruto to step in and provide financial support for the initiative. The President reportedly promised to “look into it.”

Jevin, who is also a university student and a youth activist, declined to share the exact details of his first private chat with Ruto on August 12, saying it would expose him to unnecessary calls and pressure.

The outspoken activist, who has earned the nickname “Omba Omba Comrade”, says he has embraced the tag as part of his identity in the fight for youth rights.

Ruto Announces Plans to Arrest Some MPs

President William Ruto has announced that the government will apprehend and prosecute all leaders, particularly Members of Parliament and Senators, who have been soliciting and receiving bribes to perform their legislative duties.

Speaking on Monday during a joint parliamentary group meeting between the Kenya Kwanza Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement party, the visibly angry Head of State read the riot act to lawmakers following reports that a majority of them, particularly at the committee level, had been demanding bribes to influence outcomes.

According to Ruto, he receives raw intelligence regularly and is reliably informed that some lawmakers have been consistently taking bribes.

“They are collecting money in the name of Parliament, and sometimes that money never gets to Parliament. Instead, it ends up in the pockets of a few individuals. We are not going to shame them; we are going to apprehend them,” Ruto said.

Ruto referenced the Anti-Money Laundering Bill passed by the House a few weeks ago, noting that cheques were used in an attempt to influence the outcome of the Bill.

The Head of State indicated that there was one of the lawmakers from the Senate who, for instance, had obtained a total of Ksh150 million to influence the outcome of a matter before the House. However, he did not disclose the name.

”I am a consumer of raw intelligence. Do you, for example, know that a few members of the House here received up to Ksh10 million to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill? Do you know that? Did you get the money?” Ruto posed.

Adding that, ”There are people who are destroying the credibility of the Parliament. Some of the time, that money never gets to Parliament: it only gets to a few people.”

He expressed frustration at the growing impunity, warning that this culture of graft had to come to an end.

According to the President, the time had come for the government to decisively confront and eradicate the vice. He affirmed that no one would be spared, regardless of their political affiliation or seniority.

This is the second time that the President has brought the matter into the limelight, having made similar sentiments last week.

Speaking at the opening of the National Devolution Conference on Wednesday, August 13, Ruto blasted Parliament over asking for the bribes, asserting that the Legislature needed to be held to account.

Raila Breaks Silence Over the ‘Shoot to Maim’ Order by Ruto

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has strongly criticised President William Ruto over his recent directive allowing police to shoot violent protesters in the leg.

In a statement released on Friday, July 11, Raila said it is wrong for any government to give police orders to shoot to kill, injure, confuse, or scare citizens. He insisted that Kenya should always follow the rule of law and avoid using excessive force against its people.

“Whether during protests or any law enforcement situation, such orders are unacceptable,” Raila said.

Raila, who is part of the unity government with Ruto, stressed that Kenya must respect due process and avoid empowering the police with unlawful and deadly authority — even if some citizens are suspected of wrongdoing.

President Ruto had issued the controversial order on Wednesday, July 9, while speaking at the launch of the Police Housing Project at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi. He told officers to shoot anyone who attacks businesses or police stations in the leg and then let the courts handle the rest.

“If someone storms a business or police post, shoot them in the leg. Let them go to court afterwards,” Ruto stated.

The President appeared visibly upset, blaming unnamed individuals for funding recent protests and causing unrest. He said the government would not allow anyone to threaten the country’s stability.

“I’ve kept quiet for long, but enough is enough. Some people are trying to change the government through illegal means,” Ruto added.

Raila, however, challenged the President’s approach. He said that violent demonstrators should be arrested and charged in court, not shot. According to him, that would show respect for human rights and strengthen the rule of law.

“As a nation, we are safer when we follow the principle that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Only a competent court can make that judgment,” Raila noted.

He also condemned the growing militarisation of the police and called for an end to such aggressive tactics. “We must stay away from a military-style police force,” Raila warned, adding that similar approaches in other African countries have only led to more violence.

Ruto’s remarks came as public protests continue to gain momentum nationwide. The youth-led demonstrations are demanding greater government accountability and urgent reforms.

Human rights groups have raised concerns about police brutality. A new report by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) confirmed that the death toll from the Saba Saba protests on July 7 has climbed to 31.

Raila’s comments have added to a growing national conversation about law enforcement, justice, and the importance of protecting human rights in times of political unrest.

This new gazette notice comes shortly after the High Court declared President Ruto’s earlier appointment notice invalid. The court ruled that the initial gazette had been issued against existing legal orders.

In a judgment delivered Thursday evening, a three-judge bench—Justices Roselyne Aburili, John Chigiti, and Bahati Mwamuye—said the original notice violated court orders issued on May 29, which had temporarily blocked the government from formalizing the appointments.

“The gazette notices were unlawful because they ignored a valid conservatory order,” the judges said. “The President must now issue a fresh gazette notice that complies with the court’s decision.”

However, the court dismissed a separate petition that questioned the legality of Ethekon’s and the other commissioners’ appointments. The judges found that the petition lacked sufficient evidence and did not meet the legal standard required to cancel the appointments.

Petitioners had argued that the appointments lacked inclusivity, showed signs of favoritism, and failed to include a person living with a disability—but the court found these claims unconvincing.

Samidoh Breaks Silence From Mexico Over Ruto Orders to Police to Shoot Looters in the Legs

President William Ruto’s recent directive to law enforcement officers to shoot looters in the legs has stirred sharp reactions across the country — and even caught the attention of Kenyan musician and police officer Samidoh, currently overseas.

On Wednesday, July 9, Ruto made headlines after instructing police to shoot individuals who destroy property during protests. He clarified that the intention was to incapacitate the suspects — not to kill — so they could later be taken to hospital and then prosecuted in court.

Ruto stressed the importance of maintaining peace and protecting businesses, warning that anyone attacking police facilities or officers would be considered as directly challenging the authority of the state. The president, however, also cautioned against the use of excessive force on innocent civilians, underlining that violence from either side would not be tolerated.

As Kenyans grappled with the weight of the president’s comments, Samidoh appeared to offer a quiet yet telling response.

The celebrated Mugithi singer, currently enjoying a trip in Mexico, shared a video of himself exploring Chichén-Itzá — an ancient Mayan archaeological site in Yucatán. He wore a white sleeveless shirt, sweatpants, and sandals, and was seen casually singing along to a Mugithi tune amid a light drizzle.

“Buenos días from Cancun, Mexico,” he captioned the post.

The comment section quickly turned political, with one Kenyan bluntly alerting him:
“We will be shot in the legs henceforth.”

Samidoh’s one-word reaction?
“Weh.”

That simple response seemed to capture the shock and disbelief many Kenyans are feeling.

Others chimed in with sarcasm and humor:

Fred Nyabuto: “Mexico looks deserted.”

Kipyegon Koech: “While you were away, we all became Kikuyu.”

Jackie G. Mugambi: “UDA changed its party symbol from a wheelbarrow to a wheelchair.”

Florence Nyokabi: “Cousins have become one big family… I thought you should know.”

While Samidoh’s message wasn’t a direct political statement, his minimalistic response, “Weh,” resonated with many navigating the tension between state authority and civil rights in Kenya.

“I Wrote It, Not Ruto!”- Passaris Responds After Protest Bill Is Branded ‘Ruto’s Bidding’

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has pushed back against claims that she is acting on behalf of President William Ruto by sponsoring a new bill that seeks to regulate public demonstrations.

Passaris stood firm in her support for the Public Order (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which proposes limiting protests near key government offices. She explained her reasons while addressing a rowdy crowd during a National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) event.

According to Passaris, she drafted the bill back in October 2024 after chaos broke out during the anti-Finance Bill protests. Protesters stormed Parliament and set part of the building on fire, which she says prompted her to take action.

“I began working on the bill on October 18, 2024. That was after the Gen Z protesters invaded Parliament. Property was destroyed, lives were at risk—people died,” she told the crowd.

She also made it clear that President Ruto only learned about the bill through the internet—just like everyone else.

“When I introduced the bill, it was a private member’s proposal. William Ruto had no idea. He read about it online,” she said.

Passaris also criticized the violent nature of recent youth-led protests, contrasting them with ODM’s peaceful demonstrations in the past.

“When we had issues with the IEBC, we didn’t break in or cause chaos. We met at Uhuru Park, shared our concerns, and submitted a formal letter,” she added.

The proposed law, which mirrors parts of the Assembly and Demonstrations Bill of 2024, seeks to regulate how Kenyans exercise their right to protest under Article 37 of the Constitution. It includes plans to redefine public gatherings and introduce special zones for picketing.
