“Please Forgive Us” – Ruto Bows to Tanzania Amid Explosive Diplomatic Showdown Over Tortured Activists

Kenyan President William Ruto has offered an official apology to Tanzania and Uganda, aiming to ease growing tensions between the neighboring countries.

During the National Prayer Breakfast at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Wednesday, May 28, President Ruto asked Tanzanians to forgive Kenyans for any wrongdoing.

“To our brothers and sisters in Tanzania, if we have done anything wrong, we ask for your forgiveness,” said Ruto.

He also extended his apology to Uganda and to Kenya’s youth.

“To our Ugandan neighbors, if any Kenyan has acted inappropriately, we sincerely apologize. And to our young people, if we’ve made any mistakes, we’re truly sorry. We want to build strong, respectful relationships that move our region forward,” the President added.

Why the Apology?

The apology follows a recent diplomatic row between Kenya and Tanzania. The tension began when Tanzanian authorities deported seven Kenyan activists who had traveled to attend a court session for opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

Notably, Kenyan figures such as Martha Karua, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, and four others were denied entry into Tanzania. Activist Boniface Mwangi was reportedly arrested, detained without communication, and mistreated before being deported.

Mwangi was left at the coastal town of Ukunda on the morning of Thursday, May 22, sparking outrage across Kenya and among international human rights groups.

Tanzania Responds

In response, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu defended the deportations, accusing the activists of interfering in Tanzania’s internal matters.

“We’ve seen activists from neighboring countries trying to meddle in our domestic affairs. If they’re under control at home, they shouldn’t come here to cause trouble,” President Suluhu said.

On Monday, May 26, Tanzanian lawmakers also spoke out. MP Joseph Musukuma criticized Kenyans for allegedly insulting President Suluhu, insisting that Tanzania had nothing to learn from Kenya.

“Tanzania is ahead of Kenya in many areas, including politics. We may not be fluent in English, but we know how to live. Our police should not allow outsiders to disrupt our peace,” he stated.

Tanzania Still Holding Kenyan Activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan Journalist Agatha Atuhaire – TLS President Clarifies

Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) President Boniface Mwabukusi has confirmed that Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agatha Atuhaire are still being held by Tanzanian authorities.

On Wednesday, May 21, Mwabukusi released a statement correcting earlier reports that claimed the two had been deported. He explained that Mwangi and Atuhaire are no longer in police custody but are still under the control of Tanzania’s Immigration Department.

“We want to make it clear that Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan journalist and activist, and Agatha Atuhaire, a Ugandan lawyer and journalist, have not been deported from Tanzania, as some reports suggested. While they are not with the police, they are still being held by the Immigration Department,” Mwabukusi said.

Legal Experts Demand Due Process

Mwabukusi called on Tanzanian officials to respect the law and ensure fair treatment. “We ask the Immigration Department to follow the Constitution and all legal procedures. Their actions must be lawful and respect human rights,” he stated.

He also reassured the public that legal support is in place to protect the rights of both Mwangi and Atuhaire. “Our legal team is closely watching the situation and is ready to take action to resolve it fairly and quickly,” he added.

Why Was Mwangi in Tanzania?

Boniface Mwangi had traveled to Tanzania to attend a court session for opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges.

On Monday, May 19, Mwangi posted on social media that he feared for his life. He said armed men in plain clothes were outside his hotel room in Dar es Salaam and claimed to be police officers. However, they refused to show any identification.

“My life is in danger. I’m at the Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam, and there are armed men outside my door. They say they are police, but they won’t show any ID. I won’t open the door unless they force it,” Mwangi posted.

Concerns Over Human Rights in Tanzania

Mwangi also spoke about his concerns regarding the worsening human rights situation in Tanzania under President Samia Suluhu’s government.

Tundu Lissu Faces Treason Charges in Tanzania Before 2025 Elections

Tundu Lissu, a well-known opposition leader in Tanzania, has been charged with treason, a crime that carries the death penalty in the country. This comes just six months before the 2025 national elections.

Lissu, 57, is a lawyer and politician who has spent many years fighting for democracy and human rights in Tanzania. He has survived an assassination attempt, faced multiple arrests, and lived in exile — all for standing up to the government.

In court, Lissu told his supporters:

“The treason case is a path to liberation.”

Return from Exile and Renewed Hope

After spending years in exile, Lissu returned to Tanzania in 2023. He was hopeful when President Samia Suluhu Hassan removed some restrictions put in place by her predecessor, John Magufuli. Under Magufuli, the opposition was often silenced, and many citizens feared speaking out.

However, the hope for change faded quickly. Under Hassan’s leadership, opposition party activities have again been blocked. Police have stopped rallies, arrested party members, and made it harder for people to speak freely.

Blocking Elections, Not Boycotting

In late 2024, President Hassan’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), won local elections. Lissu’s party, Chadema, accused the government of unfair practices and promised to take the case to court.

Lissu, newly named Chadema’s chairman, made it clear that his party would not simply walk away from the national elections:

“When we say no elections, we don’t mean we will boycott. We will block the elections through confrontation.”

But now, Chadema is barred from participating in the elections after refusing to sign the official electoral code of conduct.

Surviving 16 Bullets: The 2017 Assassination Attempt

In 2017, Tundu Lissu was shot 16 times in broad daylight near his home in Dodoma. The attack nearly killed him. He spent years recovering, undergoing almost 20 surgeries.

“All my limbs, my legs, my waist, my arms, my stomach were basically ripped apart,” Lissu said in an earlier interview.

That same year, he had already been arrested six times for his political activities. After the 2020 elections, he began receiving death threats and left the country again for his safety.

From Humble Beginnings to National Politics

Lissu was born in 1968 in the village of Mahambe, in Tanzania’s Singida region. As a child, he helped on the family farm and looked after cattle. He later studied law at the University of Dar es Salaam, where his passion for justice and politics grew.

He began his career in human rights and environmental law, working with organizations like the Lawyers’ Environmental Action Team (LEAT) and the World Resources Institute (WRI).

A Lifelong Fighter for Justice

Lissu became a Member of Parliament in 2010. Since then, he has been a strong voice against corruption and environmental damage, especially from foreign mining companies. His bold actions made him one of Tanzania’s most recognized opposition figures.

Despite constant threats and arrests, Lissu refuses to back down.

What’s Next for Tundu Lissu?

As Lissu waits for his next court hearing, many in Tanzania and beyond are watching closely. Will the treason case silence him — or make him even more powerful?

Peter Madeleka, a prominent lawyer, wrote online:

“Tundu Lissu is the only person in the world who survived 16 bullets. Will the treason case succeed in ending his life?”

Activist Maria Sarungi added:

“She (President Hassan) hasn’t brought him down, she has elevated him. Tundu Lissu is like water — if you don’t drink it, you’ll bathe in it.”

Conclusion

Tundu Lissu’s story is one of courage, pain, and hope. Whether he ends up behind bars or on the campaign trail, his name remains a powerful symbol of resistance in Tanzania’s fight for democracy.

Sixteen Tanzanian lawmakers heading to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) games in Mombasa were involved in a road accident.

The Friday morning crash occurred when their bus reportedly lost control and collided with an oncoming lorry in the Mbande area of Dodoma.

Dodoma Regional Police Commander George Katabazi told Mwananchi, a Tanzanian news outlet, that the incident happened around 2 a.m.

Katabazi explained that the bus driver ignored a traffic alert and attempted to overtake another vehicle on a narrow road, resulting in a head-on collision.

The bus driver has since been arrested, Katabazi confirmed. Thankfully, the accident victims are in stable condition and are receiving treatment at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma.

In a press briefing, Katabazi urged drivers to exercise caution when transporting passengers, especially during the festive season, to prevent accidents that could result in injuries or fatalities.

“The tournament, running until December 18, is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of the EAC’s 25-year journey of integration,” noted MP Vincent Mwala.

Gov’t Approves Bamburi Cement Buyout by Tanzanian Company Amsons Group

Tanzanian manufacturing and energy powerhouse Amsons Group has received approval from Kenya’s mining ministry to proceed with the unconditional acquisition of Bamburi Cement.

In July, Amsons, through its Kenyan subsidiary Amsons Industries Kenya, proposed a Ksh.23.9 billion bid to purchase a full 100% stake in the publicly traded cement company.

“Obtaining all the necessary regulatory approvals is a clear endorsement of our steadfast dedication to completing this transaction,” Amsons Group CEO Edha Nahdi stated in a media release on Wednesday, one day before the offer period ends on December 5.

“As we near the conclusion of the offer period, we are confident in our ability to finalize the acquisition seamlessly and deliver value to Bamburi Cement shareholders. This achievement underscores the strength and credibility of our offer.”

Amsons also announced receiving unconditional approval for the acquisition from the COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) Competition Commission.

“With support from KCB Investment Bank, Amsons is committed to ensuring a smooth closing process, including the prompt payment to shareholders who accept Amsons’ offer,” Nahdi added.

Bamburi Cement is primarily owned by Swiss cement manufacturer Holcim, which holds a 58.6% stake through its subsidiaries Fincem Holding and Kencem Holding.

Founded in 2006, Amsons Group is led by Tanzanian entrepreneur Edha Nahdi. With an annual revenue exceeding $1 billion (approximately Ksh.129 billion), the family-run conglomerate operates in bulk oil and petroleum imports, cement production, wheat flour milling, LPG, and transportation.

SAVANNAH OFFER

Following Amsons’ bid to acquire Bamburi, Kenyan firm Savannah Clinker placed a Ksh.25.4 billion offer for the company in August.

Savannah Clinker would offer an additional Ksh.1.8 billion to Bamburi shareholders if the deal proceeds, as confirmed by its chairman and CEO, Benson Ndeta.

According to filings with the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the five-year-old company, fully owned by Ndeta, proposed purchasing nearly 363 million Bamburi shares at Ksh.70 each, which was Ksh.5 higher than Amsons’ offer.

Last week, Ndeta was arrested in connection with an alleged fraudulent Ksh.700 million deal to expand Savannah Clinker.

He was charged on Friday at Nairobi High Court, where he denied all eight charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, obtaining execution of security under false pretenses, and presenting false documents.

Despite a High Court order halting Ndeta’s prosecution and detention on Friday, the businessman remained in custody over the weekend and was released unconditionally on Monday.

The case, which some politicians claim is aimed at derailing his Bamburi Cement bid, is scheduled for mention on January 21.

Amsons’ approval for the Bamburi acquisition comes shortly after Holcim announced its decision to divest from its Nigerian operations, selling its nearly 84% stake in Lafarge Africa for $1 billion (Ksh.129 billion). This exit is part of Holcim’s strategy to concentrate on high-growth regions like North America, according to Reuters.

President Ruto Set to Jet Out Friday – Here’s Why

President William Ruto is scheduled to travel to Arusha, Tanzania, on Friday, November 29, to participate in a summit for the East African Community (EAC).

The president confirmed his attendance during the African Special Economic Zones (SEZs) annual meeting held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi on Thursday.

At the summit, which will bring together EAC Heads of State, discussions will focus on enhancing the regional business environment and fostering closer economic integration.

President Ruto highlighted that a key agenda item will be the adoption of a unified SEZ policy aimed at harmonizing the treatment of goods produced within these zones.

This policy is expected to streamline trade operations and support industrial growth across member states.

“The Heads of State from EAC will convene in Arusha to deliberate on improving the business climate and integrating our economies further. The SEZ policy, which our ministers have already agreed upon, is set to be approved at the summit,” President Ruto stated.

He also emphasized the significance of the recently approved EAC Special Economic Zone regulations for 2024.

These regulations are designed to facilitate the free movement of goods across member states, promoting regional cohesion and establishing economic zones as pivotal hubs for industrialization and economic development.

“Under the new EAC SEZ regulation, member states will benefit from seamless trade across the region. This will not only enhance regional integration but also accelerate industrial and economic progress,” the president explained.

Additionally, President Ruto urged African entrepreneurs to prioritize investments within their own countries to drive inclusive growth.

He noted that many African investors choose to invest abroad due to a lack of confidence in the continent.

“It’s time for Africans to believe in themselves and invest locally. We must lead by example before expecting foreign investors to support our economies,” he remarked.

After Kenya, Adani Group Eyes Ksh116 Billion Deal in Tanzania

Adani Group has shown interest in investing in Tanzania’s power infrastructure, shortly after creating a stir over its planned investments in Kenya.

According to a Bloomberg report, Tanzania’s Public Private Partnership Centre received an expression of interest from the Adani Group to build high-voltage power lines in the country.

Davis Kafulila, the Executive Director of Tanzania’s Public Private Partnership Centre, stated that Adani Group submitted a $900 million (Ksh 116.14 billion) proposal aimed at modernizing the country’s electrical infrastructure.

This move highlights Adani’s expanding investment focus in East Africa, despite public protests.

Tanzania has already strengthened its business ties with the Indian conglomerate by awarding it a 30-year concession in May to operate the main container terminal at Dar es Salaam port.

Adani’s investment model caused controversy in Kenya when reports surfaced about its secretive dealings with the Kenyan government to take over management of the country’s busiest airport.

However, the investment proposal was halted after Kenyan Members of Parliament directed the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on September 24 to stop further engagement due to the lack of transparency.

David Pkosing, Chairperson of the Parliament Committee on Transport and Pokot South MP, directed KAA to suspend the deal until investigations by his committee are concluded later this month.

Pkosing stated, “It is the advice of this committee that because we are going to order a special audit, you don’t do anything with Adani until this committee presents a report to parliament. If you do, it’s up to you.”

The directive followed joint engagements between the Senate and the National Assembly with key stakeholders who were believed to be involved in the Adani-Kenya deal.

Additionally, Adani is in discussions with the Kenyan government for a proposed $736 million (Ksh 94.9 billion) concession to construct high-voltage power lines.

These developments come amid allegations of money laundering against Adani Group in Switzerland—allegations the company has denied as it seeks to maintain its reputation.

Tanzania’s Opposition Leaders Arrested as Authorities Crack Down on Planned Protest

Tanzania’s leading opposition figures were detained on Monday, according to their party, as authorities sought to prevent a large protest in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial hub.

Despite an official prohibition, the Chadema party had committed to proceeding with the rally, which was focused on allegations of kidnapping and murder involving its members by security forces.

Chadema reported that its chairman, Freeman Mbowe, and deputy, Tundu Lissu, were both arrested on Monday. Riot police were deployed throughout key areas in the city to deter gatherings.

“Demonstration is our constitutional right, and we are astonished by the level of force used by the police to intimidate citizens and curtail our freedoms,” Mbowe stated to supporters before his arrest, as shown in a video released by the party.

The party claims that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration is reverting to the oppressive methods of her predecessor, John Magufuli.

Hassan assumed office following Magufuli’s unexpected death in March 2021 and initially indicated a more progressive stance by lifting restrictions on opposition gatherings and media.

However, Chadema contends that security forces are responsible for the recent disappearances of several party members, including the recent murder of Ali Mohamed Kibao, a member of its national secretariat.

In August, police also disrupted a youth day rally organized by Chadema, resulting in the arrest of numerous party leaders, including Mbowe and Lissu.

Human rights organizations and Western governments, including the U.S., have expressed concerns over the resurgence of repression in the lead-up to local elections in November and a general election scheduled for late 2025.

Lissu, a prominent opposition figure, has faced numerous arrests and survived multiple gunshot wounds from an assassination attempt in 2017.

He returned to Tanzania last year after Hassan lifted the ban on opposition protests.

Authorities had claimed that the Chadema protests could incite violence.

Yet, in a speech shared on X on Sunday, Mbowe stated, “I remind Tanzanians that we will conduct peaceful protests. We are not armed and have no intention of disrupting the peace, contrary to some claims.

“If any of us are arrested, injured, or even killed, please pray for us and do not lose hope. We are striving to make our country a more peaceful place,” he added.

A Tanzanian opposition party member from Chadema has been discovered dead after being abducted, assaulted, and attacked with acid, according to the party’s leader, Freeman Mbowe.

Ali Mohamed Kibao, a national secretariat member of Chadema, was reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint on Friday by suspected security operatives while traveling from Dar es Salaam to Tanga. His body was later found in Dar es Salaam’s Ununio waterfront on Saturday night.

This incident occurred shortly after a mass detention involving Mbowe, his deputy Tundu Lissu, and other party leaders, ahead of a scheduled youth party event.

Postmortem results, witnessed by Chadema lawyers, confirmed that Kibao was brutally beaten and had acid poured on his face, according to Mbowe.

He emphasized the rising threats to the lives of Chadema members, adding that several party officials had disappeared.

Kibao, a former military intelligence officer, had previously worked with both the opposition and the ruling CCM party before joining Chadema, although no specific timeline was provided.

While authorities have yet to make a formal statement regarding Kibao’s death, police spokesperson David Misime confirmed an investigation had begun into the abduction.

Human rights organizations and opposition figures have expressed concerns over a potential resurgence of repressive policies reminiscent of former President John Magufuli’s era.

Despite President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s pledge to revive “competitive politics” and relax restrictions on the opposition, including lifting a six-year ban on opposition activities, the recent arrests are seen as a troubling sign ahead of the local elections in December 2024 and the general elections set for next year.

Mbowe himself faced arrest in 2021 before being released in March 2022 after terrorism charges against him were dropped.

Lissu, who survived a 2017 assassination attempt, has also faced multiple arrests and returned to Tanzania in 2023 following the lifting of the ban on opposition activities.

Five officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Buruburu, Nairobi, were apprehended by Tanzanian authorities on Friday for unlawfully entering the country.

As per a police document obtained by Gossipa2z.com, these officers were pursuing a motor vehicle theft ring from Nairobi to Tanzania and inadvertently crossed the Kenyan border into Tanzanian territory.

Their objective was to apprehend a Kenyan individual suspected of involvement in the syndicate, who had led them to the border in search of his alleged Tanzanian accomplice.

Reportedly, the officers believed the Tanzanian suspect played a role in receiving stolen vehicles from Kenya as part of the syndicate.

However, the Tanzanian suspect raised an alarm, attracting the attention of local officers on patrol, who promptly arrested the five Kenyan officers for trespassing into Tanzanian territory.

Consequently, the five officers and two suspects were detained and transported to Tarakea Police Station.

Despite attempts by the DCIO Kajiado South to negotiate the release of the detained officers with Tanzanian authorities, these efforts have been unsuccessful.

Recent updates indicate that the officers have been relocated to the headquarters of Rombo Mkuu District.

A portion of the police report stated, “The Subcounty security intelligence team is actively pursuing this matter to secure the release of the officers.”
