Martha Karua Warns: Ruto’s Government on Borrowed Time After Raila Odinga’s Death

Kenya’s political landscape could be facing major turbulence following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, according to People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua. Speaking to TV47 on December 23, Karua warned that President William Ruto’s administration is at risk of instability without Odinga’s political influence.

“If there is someone heavily bereaved politically, it is Ruto. Without Baba’s presence, he will not get unified support. Even now, he is not so sure that he can make it another year,” Karua said, referring to Odinga by his widely recognized nickname, Baba.

Karua emphasized that Odinga’s absence will have significant implications for the upcoming 2027 General Elections, hinting that the President’s political trajectory was closely tied to his alignment with Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. According to her, potential shifts within ODM could disadvantage Ruto, especially given the ongoing divisions within the party regarding its relationship with the government.

The PLP leader also disclosed her final conversation with Odinga before his death. She said the former Prime Minister admitted feeling uneasy about his ties with Ruto’s administration. “I told him I don’t want an answer today, I’m leaving it with you to think, but he did say he was very uncomfortable,” Karua recalled. She added that she had encouraged Odinga to consider stepping away from the government, even if it meant its collapse.

Beyond electoral predictions, Karua accused President Ruto of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies and criticized the administration for allegedly failing to protect citizens detained in neighbouring countries. She also pointed to the November by-elections as a wake-up call for opposition parties, insisting that these events underscore the need for vigilance in challenging the ruling government.

Karua concluded her interview with a bold statement, asserting that Ruto is likely to serve only one term as president, signaling a potentially dramatic shift in Kenya’s political dynamics in the coming years.

“Two Groups, One Agenda”: Gachagua Accuses Raila of Secret Political Deals

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused ODM leader Raila Odinga of secretly playing both sides of the political spectrum to influence the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at Jesus Exaltation Church, Bethsaida in Kajiado East, Gachagua claimed Raila had created two separate factions to benefit no matter the outcome.

According to him, the ODM boss was being “strategic,” using the newly formed Kenya Moja alliance led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to challenge the government from within.

“Raila is very clever. Don’t be fooled when he says he hasn’t fielded a candidate. He has two groups within the government,” Gachagua said.

“One group is to extort money from the government by backing it. Because he knows the President is a conman, he has formed a different group to make noise. When he said ODM would not field a candidate, it was because his cheque was late.”

Senator Sifuna has recently faced criticism inside ODM for being a divisive figure despite serving as Secretary General. In August, he made headlines after saying he was ready to quit ODM if it supported Kenya Kwanza in 2027.

Since then, Sifuna has teamed up with youthful leaders like Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba to form a fresh political outfit.

But Gachagua insists the new alliance is part of Raila’s wider plan to exploit the Kenya Kwanza administration. He also alleged that Raila’s silence on ODM’s 2027 candidate is tied to financial deals with the government.

Going further, Gachagua claimed President William Ruto once told him that Raila’s political moves were motivated by money rather than ideology. He added, “When he said ODM would not field a candidate, it was because his cheque was late.”

Sifuna has previously denied being anyone’s political project and has not yet responded to these fresh claims.

During ODM’s 20th anniversary, Raila urged members to avoid premature remarks about 2027, saying only the party will give an official position. He hinted ODM could field a candidate, asking:

“Don’t commit the party to some things that have not been discussed. Who told you ODM does not have a candidate in 2027?”

Raila Breaks Silence Over the ‘Shoot to Maim’ Order by Ruto

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has strongly criticised President William Ruto over his recent directive allowing police to shoot violent protesters in the leg.

In a statement released on Friday, July 11, Raila said it is wrong for any government to give police orders to shoot to kill, injure, confuse, or scare citizens. He insisted that Kenya should always follow the rule of law and avoid using excessive force against its people.

“Whether during protests or any law enforcement situation, such orders are unacceptable,” Raila said.

Raila, who is part of the unity government with Ruto, stressed that Kenya must respect due process and avoid empowering the police with unlawful and deadly authority — even if some citizens are suspected of wrongdoing.

President Ruto had issued the controversial order on Wednesday, July 9, while speaking at the launch of the Police Housing Project at Kilimani Police Station in Nairobi. He told officers to shoot anyone who attacks businesses or police stations in the leg and then let the courts handle the rest.

“If someone storms a business or police post, shoot them in the leg. Let them go to court afterwards,” Ruto stated.

The President appeared visibly upset, blaming unnamed individuals for funding recent protests and causing unrest. He said the government would not allow anyone to threaten the country’s stability.

“I’ve kept quiet for long, but enough is enough. Some people are trying to change the government through illegal means,” Ruto added.

Raila, however, challenged the President’s approach. He said that violent demonstrators should be arrested and charged in court, not shot. According to him, that would show respect for human rights and strengthen the rule of law.

“As a nation, we are safer when we follow the principle that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Only a competent court can make that judgment,” Raila noted.

He also condemned the growing militarisation of the police and called for an end to such aggressive tactics. “We must stay away from a military-style police force,” Raila warned, adding that similar approaches in other African countries have only led to more violence.

Ruto’s remarks came as public protests continue to gain momentum nationwide. The youth-led demonstrations are demanding greater government accountability and urgent reforms.

Human rights groups have raised concerns about police brutality. A new report by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) confirmed that the death toll from the Saba Saba protests on July 7 has climbed to 31.

Raila’s comments have added to a growing national conversation about law enforcement, justice, and the importance of protecting human rights in times of political unrest.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has strongly dismissed a fake quote that was wrongly linked to its leader, Raila Odinga.

In an official statement issued on Friday, July 4, the party clarified that the remarks circulating online were not made by Raila. The fake quote claimed that Raila had accused Kenyans of betraying him after he agreed to form a broad-based government with President William Ruto. The ODM party responded to the post by saying, “Another fake one,” signaling that the quote was false and misleading.

ODM also pointed out that Raila did not have any public engagements on the day the quote was allegedly made. A quick check on his social media confirmed that his last public activity was on Thursday, when he met with India’s High Commissioner to Kenya.

The ODM leader has been under pressure in recent weeks over his decision to work with President Ruto’s administration. Critics, including other opposition leaders, have accused him of abandoning their joint struggle and aligning himself with the government.

Additionally, Raila has been criticized for supporting the proposed takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by Adani Group, a deal that was later cancelled following public outrage. Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was among those who spoke out against Raila’s stance.

“I’m shocked that Raila Odinga regrets the cancellation,” Kalonzo said in June. “How can any patriotic Kenyan support a deal that puts our key infrastructure at risk?”

Kalonzo added, “Kenya’s airports belong to the people. Our sovereignty is not up for sale. We will not allow such deals to go through under our watch.”

ODM party leader Raila Odinga has donated five acres of land to the government to boost the Affordable Housing project in Kisumu.

President William Ruto shared the news during his tour of Kisumu on Thursday, May 29, 2025. He spoke about the donation while preparing to officially open several new housing units in the city.

Ruto explained that Raila gave the land to help build homes for low-income families in Kisumu.

“I’m here with Raila, who has generously given five acres of his personal land so that affordable houses can be built for the people of Kisumu,” said the President.

President Ruto praised Raila for his support of the government’s key housing program.

Raila, in turn, urged Kisumu residents to support Ruto’s government, saying that the region has much to gain from upcoming development projects.

During his visit, Ruto will officially launch Phase One of the LAPFUND Makasembo Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu.

The President’s trip is part of his three-day tour of the Nyanza region ahead of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay County. During the visit, he will also hand over keys to 910 new housing units.

The government’s Affordable Housing initiative aims to build 200,000 homes each year, with a goal of delivering 1 million houses within five years.

As of April 2025, around 140,000 homes had already been completed. A recent batch of 5,000 homes saw over 500,000 people express interest through the Boma Yangu online platform.

Kenyans are encouraged to register on Boma Yangu, save consistently, and follow updates to boost their chances of getting a home when new units are released.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura added that those who have saved for a longer period and those with larger families will get priority when homes are allocated.

Many Kenyans Believe Raila Odinga Might Support President Ruto in 2027, New Poll Shows

A growing number of Kenyans think ODM party leader Raila Odinga could switch sides and back President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.

This is based on the latest findings from the National Public Issues Survey conducted by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA). According to the report, 38% of Kenyans believe Raila may support Ruto for a second term. This opinion is closely tied to views on the ongoing bipartisan talks, widely known as the BBG (Bipartisan and Building Bridges Group).

The survey clearly shows that Kenyans who support the BBG process are more likely to expect Raila to team up with Ruto. In fact, twice as many BBG supporters (38%) think Raila will support Ruto compared to only 18% among BBG critics.

Still, not everyone agrees.

Nearly 46% of those surveyed believe Raila will stick to his usual role in the opposition, either by running for president himself or by backing a different candidate. Surprisingly, even among BBG supporters, 38% think Raila will eventually abandon the coalition and return to the opposition.

The report highlights just how uncertain Raila’s next move is, given his long history as Kenya’s top opposition figure.

This uncertainty is even stronger among BBG critics. More than half (53%) of those against the BBG believe Raila will return to the opposition, whether or not he runs for president.

“Slightly over half of BBG opponents expect Raila to rejoin the Opposition by 2027,” the TIFA report notes.

BBG Alliance Faces Low Public Support

The survey, which included 2,024 respondents from nine regions, also shows that the Broad-Based Government (BBG) — a loose coalition between President Ruto and Raila Odinga — has weak support.

Only 22% of Kenyans support the Ruto-Raila alliance, while 54% oppose it. Another 25% are undecided.

BBG support is mostly regional, with the highest backing found in Central Rift (37%), Northern Kenya (35%), and Nyanza (25%). In contrast, Mt. Kenya (72%) and Lower Eastern (70%) strongly reject the coalition. These are regions loyal to Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka, respectively.

TIFA described the alliance as fragile, especially since even in Raila’s home base of Nyanza, support is lukewarm.

“Mount Kenya and Lower Eastern, which heavily supported Ruto and Kalonzo in 2022, are now critical of the BBG,” the report says.

Economic Frustration Fuels BBG Rejection

One major reason Kenyans are turning against the BBG is the struggling economy. Among BBG opponents, 85% say their financial situation has worsened since the 2022 elections. In comparison, only 52% of BBG supporters feel the same.

The survey also shows a clear link between economic hardship and political dissatisfaction. Just 4% of Kenyans who feel better off financially oppose the BBG — suggesting that most BBG critics are reacting to worsening economic conditions.

“Although there are many reasons for political views, economic decline is clearly a strong factor,” the report concludes.

Raila Claims South Sudan Denied Him Access to Arrested VP Riek Machar, Told to Visit Museveni

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed frustration after the South Sudan government blocked him from speaking with the country’s First Vice President, Riek Machar. Machar is currently under house arrest following his recent detention.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, Odinga said he met with South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, who explained the reasons behind Machar’s arrest. According to Kiir, Machar was detained after a military general and ten others were killed in Nasir, a town in the Upper Nile region.

Despite Odinga’s request to meet Machar, South Sudanese authorities denied him access, citing ongoing investigations into the alleged killings.

Raila Odinga’s Statement on Machar’s Arrest

Odinga revealed that his discussions with President Kiir focused on the security situation in South Sudan. He was informed that Machar’s detention was necessary as investigations continued.

“I had a long discussion with President Kiir, who explained the challenges they are facing. He told me that a general and ten others were killed in Nasir, and they are investigating the matter,” Odinga said.

“Because of this, Vice President Riek Machar has been placed under house arrest. I requested to speak with him, but my request was denied,” he added.

Odinga Seeks International Intervention

After his meeting with Kiir, Odinga traveled to Entebbe, Uganda, where he held talks with President Yoweri Museveni. During their discussion, he updated Museveni on the situation in South Sudan and called for international intervention to prevent further conflict.

Odinga urged the United Nations and other global bodies to step in and ensure a peaceful resolution.

“They have not yet made a direct connection between Machar and the killings, but they assured me that they would conclude investigations quickly. When I return to Juba, they promised to allow me to meet with Machar,” Odinga stated.

International Reactions to Machar’s Detention

Machar was arrested on March 26 when armed security officers stormed his residence in Juba. His bodyguards were disarmed, and he was taken into custody along with his wife, Angela Teny, who serves as South Sudan’s Interior and Coordination Minister.

His arrest has sparked widespread condemnation, with the United States and the African Union among the first to demand his immediate release. International organizations have expressed concerns that his detention could further destabilize the already fragile peace in South Sudan.

Conclusion

The political crisis in South Sudan remains tense, with growing calls for Machar’s release and a peaceful resolution. As investigations continue, the international community is closely watching how the situation unfolds. Raila Odinga remains hopeful that he will be granted access to Machar soon, as efforts to mediate the conflict continue.

Why Riek Machar Was Detained

The government of President Kiir has accused Dr. Machar of planning a rebellion to destabilize the country. On Friday, South Sudan’s Information Minister, Michael Makuei, said intelligence reports showed that Machar was mobilizing his SPLA-IO forces to cause chaos. He was placed under house arrest on Wednesday.

In response, the SPLA-IO warned that Machar’s arrest threatens the fragile peace deal signed in 2018.

International Community Calls for Machar’s Release

Several international bodies and countries have condemned the arrest of Dr. Machar:

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged President Kiir to release Machar and restore the unity government created in 2018.

African Union Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the AU will send a peace mission led by retired Kenyan Judge Effie Owuor.

Western diplomatic missions including the US, UK, France, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, and the EU demanded Machar’s release.

IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) said the arrest of Machar undermines the peace agreement.

Embassies Closed Due to Rising Tensions

The security situation in South Sudan continues to get worse. Germany and Norway have closed their embassies in Juba, while the United States and the United Kingdom have reduced their staff.

Nairobi, March 28, 2025 — The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has praised ODM leader Raila Odinga for his efforts to bring peace to South Sudan.

President William Ruto recently appointed Raila Odinga as Kenya’s special envoy to Sudan. Raila’s main task is to help stop the growing conflict in South Sudan, where tensions have been rising after the arrest of opposition leader Riek Machar.

Speaking to the media on Friday, March 28, Guterres said the situation in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, is very serious. He warned that if no action is taken, the country might fall back into war, undoing the peace deal signed in 2018.

The UN Secretary General said he fully supports the African Union (AU) and IGAD missions that are working to maintain peace in South Sudan. He also praised Raila Odinga’s leadership in trying to prevent a new civil war.

“We support the AU’s decision to deploy the Panel of the Wise and the efforts of Raila Odinga, who was appointed by President Ruto of Kenya. We are working closely with the AU and IGAD. Raila and the Panel will meet both President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar. We want to make sure that peace returns to South Sudan,” Guterres said.

South Sudan Faces Economic Crisis

Guterres warned that if war breaks out again, it will destroy South Sudan’s economy and stability. He said the country is already suffering, with oil revenues falling and inflation rising to 300%.

He compared the current tension to the past civil wars of 2013 and 2016, which killed over 400,000 people.

“We must act now to avoid another disaster. Our UN mission in South Sudan is working day and night to calm tensions, protect civilians, and encourage peace talks,” Guterres said.

Peace Needed Before 2026 Elections

The UN boss stressed that peace is necessary for South Sudan to hold its general elections next year. Without peace, the elections will not be possible.

Riek Machar and President Salva Kiir have had a difficult relationship since 2013. After South Sudan gained independence in 2011, the two leaders worked together. However, they fell out two years later when Kiir accused Machar, who was then Vice President, of planning a coup. Machar later left the ruling party and formed the SPLM-in-Opposition.

Final Call for Peace

Guterres called on the international community to support peace efforts and ensure South Sudan does not return to war. He stressed that this is the time to act and save the world’s youngest country from another tragedy.
