Homa Bay MP George Kaluma Sparks Debate Over Circumcision

Homa Bay Member of Parliament, George Kaluma, has sparked controversy by calling for an end to circumcision. He described the practice as a form of male genital mutilation and urged Kenyans to abandon it.

Circumcision is a deep-rooted tradition in Kenya. Many communities consider it an important rite of passage for boys transitioning into manhood. Some cultures perform circumcision during adolescence, while others do it on infants as young as nine days old.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Kaluma questioned the necessity of the practice. He wrote:

“End circumcision now. It’s nothing but male genital mutilation. Even donkeys don’t do it. No animals do, except a small group of humans misled into believing they are descendants of Abraham—a man who lived in a desert without water!”

His remarks have triggered a heated debate across Kenya. While some people agree with his views, others strongly defend circumcision as an essential cultural and health practice.

Why Circumcision Remains Controversial

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has strongly criticized the media for allowing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to speak frequently on television and radio.

On February 26, Kaluma shared his concerns on social media, accusing the media of giving Gachagua a platform that could lead to trouble before the 2027 elections. He warned that allowing Gachagua to make public statements could create division and chaos in the country.

According to Kaluma, Gachagua’s remarks are causing unnecessary conflicts and could make the political situation in Kenya worse. He expressed fears that if such statements continue unchecked, the 2027 elections could witness more violence than ever before.

Kaluma also called out the media for being careless and failing to maintain professional standards when reporting. He claimed that since the 2022 general elections, Kenyan media has not been fair in its coverage. He blamed journalists for spreading harmful information instead of reporting responsibly.

“If the Kenyan media keeps spreading such harmful content in an unprofessional and careless way, our country may face serious consequences,” Kaluma warned.

Meanwhile, Gachagua, during an interview with a Kamba radio station, challenged President William Ruto to arrest him. He promised to reveal government secrets if detained.

Gachagua, who was removed from office in 2024, has been frequently invited by Kenyan media to share his views. He regularly criticizes President Ruto and blames his administration for failing the country and betraying the Mount Kenya region.

During an interview on Inooro TV on December 15, 2024, Gachagua accused Ruto of ignoring Cabinet Secretaries and making government decisions without consulting other leaders.

On February 4, 2025, in another interview, he alleged that Ruto had offered him Ksh2 billion to step down from office.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka agreed with Kaluma, stating that it was wrong for Gachagua to continue attacking the President in public interviews and media discussions.

Homa Bay MP George Peter Kaluma has drawn criticism from both American and global media for sharing incorrect information about US Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party’s campaign.

Kaluma recently announced his visit to the United States, where he is actively supporting Republican Presidential Candidate and former President Donald Trump due to his conservative views.

The MP has been quite vocal on social media, where he has been promoting Trump’s candidacy vigorously.

In one post, however, Kaluma shared a misleading image of Dan Boyle, the Mayor of Cork, alongside participants of a recent nudist cycling event, falsely suggesting it was related to his reasons for supporting Trump.

In a tweet dated September 11, Kaluma expressed his shift from supporting the Democrats to backing Republicans, accompanied by a photo of painted naked cyclists, attributing his decision to what he perceived as the Democrats’ decline.

Kaluma has cited this incident as a primary reason for his support of Trump and his decision to campaign for Republicans.

The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) event in Ireland, where the image was taken, occurred in Cork on August 27.

The misleading posts have garnered attention from media outlets in both the US and Ireland, who have criticized Kaluma for spreading false information to undermine Kamala Harris’ campaign.

As he campaigns for Trump, the ODM MP has labeled Kamala Harris as insincere, underscoring his support for Trump.

Interestingly, last year, Kaluma also launched a campaign in Kenya targeting the LGBTQ community, proposing severe penalties, including life imprisonment and, in some cases, the death penalty for same-gender activities.

Peter Kaluma, member of parliament for Homabay Town, raised the alarm on Saturday regarding the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) allegedly biased recruitment of tutors.

The lawmaker asserted that teachers from Mount Kenya obtain employment almost immediately after graduation and questioned why the situation differs in other regions.

In addition, he asserted that teachers from Luo Nyanza and Ukambani are treated unfairly during TSC recruitment cycles.

Kaluma continued by stating that it was improper to hire and deploy teachers from regions deemed favorable and dispatch them to assignments where teachers remain unemployed. 

In addition, he asserted that politicians have seized control of TSC recruitment.

“The teachers-recruitment exercise has been taken over by UDA politicians leaving TSC as bystanders in its core function,” he complained.

Therefore, the representative advocated for equitable recruitment to represent Kenya.

“Going forward, teachers should be employed on a first-to-graduate, first-to-be-employed basis. And with the removal of the “delocalization” policy, let teachers teach in their home areas, he stated.

In addition, he suggested that an audit be conducted on all 60,000 instructors hired by the current administration.

According to TSC data presented to the National Assembly Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Cohesion in March, the maximum number of registered teachers are Kalenjin and Kikuyu.

Kalenjins (59,538), Kikuyus (59,010), Luhyas (52,882), Luos (40,657), and Kambas (39,807) comprised the largest proportion of teachers employed by TSC at the time, according to the report.

The CEO of the TSC, Nancy Macharia, explained that the unequal distribution was the result of incessant prodding by members of Congress.

“The commission wanted to employ and deploy according to the needs of regions but the committee rejected that model and said teachers should be shared equally to all counties and our hands were tied,” Macharia complained.
