A missing university student, last seen on September 2, has been found dead in what authorities are calling a drowning case.

The body, in an advanced state of decomposition, was discovered floating in the River Narok, about 10 kilometers from Maasai Mara University.

Police, in coordination with Red Cross officials, recovered the body and transferred it to the morgue at Narok County Referral Hospital.

Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare confirmed the discovery, noting that the body was found floating in the Morijoi area of the river.

This grim find ends the days of uncertainty over the student’s disappearance, which occurred on the morning of September 2.

After being reported missing at the Maasai Mara police post, family and friends launched efforts to search for the journalism student.

Commander Ngare stated that the student’s mother traveled from Eldoret to Narok to identify the body of her daughter.

This tragic event raises concerns about the dangers students face from the River Narok, especially those from Maasai Mara University.

In April, two more students from the same university perished in the river after attempting to cross a weak bridge.

The victims, a male and female, were swept away while trying to cross the swollen river during a recreational outing.

Authorities said the two students slipped and fell into the river, with one trying to rescue the other before both were overwhelmed by the current.

The River Narok is notorious for its hazardous spots, which have claimed not just student lives but those of residents.

Experts in the area have warned that during the rainy season, the river can swell to depths of up to 14 meters, making it particularly dangerous.

On Sunday, there was a dispute between Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu and Senator Ledama Ole Kina at an Interdenominational Prayer Service that was also attended by President Ruto.

The two leaders engaged in heated exchanges over conflicts arising from differing opinions regarding a disputed area within Kilgoris.

Ole Kina stated that the tension regarding the border disagreement between Uasin Gishu County and Narok had subsided due to the presence of security forces deployed two weeks before the President’s arrival.

However, Ntutu asserted that the county government was addressing the issue without the Senator’s awareness, as this was the first instance of him mentioning the land matter.

“The small matter you heard the Senator speak about between Uasin Gishu and Siria we have intervened as the County Government, and it is not true that it has been calm only because you have come here, we have many programs to solve the matter,” stated Ntutu

He additionally urged the Narok senator to frequent the area and depart from Nairobi to gain insight into the disputed border’s historical background.

“My request would be to you Ledama to come and learn the history of this land, so that you don’t just complain without enough information as this is the first time you have mentioned it, come from Nairobi even when you are wearing that Shuka and we can discuss the matter stated Ntutu.

The Governor observed that the Senator was unaware and disconnected from the issue, thus refusing to allow him to address it.

Apart from delving into Narok politics, Senator Ole Kina also censured Governors, alleging that instead of focusing on the development of their counties, they were primarily concerned with enriching themselves.

He criticized the central government for its failure to raise the allocation to County governments, highlighting how this shortfall was impeding development at the local level.

During an independent occasion held at Kapsabet Boys High School, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua emphasized his intent to address individuals causing disturbances during President William Ruto’s recent gatherings.

He mentioned that he planned to gather all the leaders implicated in the heckling to discuss how to proceed and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Alice Chepkirui, the nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) from Narok, has faced a setback as the Nakuru Court of Appeal has affirmed the High Court’s decision to invalidate her nomination for the position.

As per the petition presented by Josephine Seneiyo Torome in the High Court, Chepkirui was put forward as a candidate for the position by the Jubilee party, despite her association with ODM.

Torome, the petitioner, contended via her legal representative that the MCA nominee, who sought a position in Narok County, was a registered voter in Nakuru County.

The attorney also pointed out that the individual she represents contested Kering’s inclusion in the gender top-up list and prevailed in a judgment delivered by a chief magistrate at the High Court.

“My client Ms. Torome, being the next person in the gender top-up list from the Jubilee Party should be sworn in as the nominated MCA within the Jubilee party list that had been subjected to Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” the lawyer stated. 

Speaking after the ruling, Chepkirui accepted the outcome, thanking her lawyers for fighting for her and enabling her to come thus far in the case.

“My lawyer has fought hard in this. He wasn’t just fighting for me but also for the whole of Narok County, which is not an easy thing,” Chepkirui stated. 

Torome expressed gratitude to the court for deciding in her favor and pledged to leverage her role to advocate for and uplift women.

“I will do my best to empower my fellow women and the vulnerable children in my community. I am grateful that the seat is coming back to me,” Torome stated. 

In September 2023, Alice Kering’s appeal was dismissed by the High Court following the nullification of her nomination to Narok County by a High Court Magistrate.

As per the decision pronounced by Justice Francis Gikonyo, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) was not affiliated with the Jubilee party when she received the nomination to the county assembly. Additionally, she was not a registered voter in the County at that time.

Justice Gikonyo also observed that Kering was affiliated with the ODM party at that time, and she was appointed by the party to the Nakuru county assembly from 2017 to 2022.

Kina additionally claims that the Chief Park Administrator has been specifically directed to personally gather money from prominent figures. Kina questions how the authorization was granted for 46 camping sites within Mara Gem to function by imposing an additional fee of $80 for accommodations and an extra $200 for park entry. This action, criticized by the tourism federation, is anticipated to dissuade tourists.

He stated that despite the greater Mara region now having more than 5,000 beds, the County Government has not seen improvements in the sector despite the profits generated.

Ledama additionally contended that the current state of affairs has jeopardized the business prospects of the 117 local-owned campgrounds situated along the Mara River, especially with the rise in fee charges.

The lawmaker claimed that taking such action without involving the public was unjust, suggesting that the Governor had pressured the group of local investors.

Regarding education, Ledama claimed that the delayed disbursement of educational scholarships was caused by an unexplained sum of Ksh.451 million and outstanding payments owed by the County.

In the past few days, several analysts have ranked Narok County as one of the top regions nationwide in terms of development and delivery of services.
