Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has strongly spoken out against the violence that broke out during the official launch of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s new political party. He urged leaders and their supporters to embrace peaceful and respectful politics.

Kindiki criticized those who use force and intimidation to settle political disagreements. His remarks came shortly after a group of alleged thugs tried to disrupt Gachagua’s event in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday, May 15.

In his statement, Kindiki warned that violence, hate speech, and divisive politics are dangerous and can reverse Kenya’s democratic gains. He called for mutual respect, even when people have different political views.

“Our country must uphold democracy and focus on real issues affecting Kenyans,” he said. “There’s no room for violence, insults, or toxic politics. These only harm our society.”

He added that Kenya’s future depends on building a nation rooted in peace and respect. “We owe it to our children and grandchildren to create a country where people can disagree without fighting.”

The chaos happened just as Gachagua was wrapping up the launch of his new party — Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). Trouble started when suspected disruptors attempted to interfere as Gachagua and DCP officials were exiting the venue.

Videos shared by Gossipa2z showed police officers stepping in quickly. Shots were fired in the air to scatter the crowd and restore calm. Gachagua’s team had to pause briefly while security handled the situation, but the tension eased soon afterward.

Despite the incident, Gachagua went on to unveil the DCP party headquarters and presented the party’s symbols — a neon green and white logo with the words ‘Skiza Wakenya’, featuring a hand cupping an ear to symbolize listening to the people.

April 5, 2025 – Kikuyu Member of Parliament and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has called on the people of Tharaka Nithi to rally behind President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in 2027. Ichung’wah believes that supporting Ruto’s re-election will ensure a smooth transition to Kithure Kindiki, the current Deputy President, as the next leader of Kenya.

Ichung’wah made these remarks while accompanying President Ruto on a visit to Tharaka Nithi County on Friday, April 4, 2025. He urged residents to view Kindiki’s potential presidency as a reward for their continued support, stressing that their backing for Ruto would help pave the way for the next political chapter.

A Call for Unity and Support

Ichung’wah emphasized that President Ruto should serve a full ten-year term, just like past leaders such as Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta, and Jomo Kenyatta. He stated, “In 2027, what do you think? “We, as the Kikuyu, don’t get upset by how you give us your votes in Mt Kenya West. Uhuru Kenyatta, didn’t he serve his ten years? Mwai Kibaki also served his ten years, and even Jomo Kenyatta did too. We too will return this favor when Ruto completes his ten years; we will give Kindiki the presidency as a way of showing our appreciation,” Ichung’wah said.

Tharaka Nithi’s Political Journey

Ichung’wah also reflected on Tharaka Nithi’s political journey. In 2022, the region was concerned about its future, but the appointment of Kindiki as Deputy President alleviated much of this anxiety. Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi’s ties with Kenya Kwanza may complicate efforts by some MPs to impeach him.

Muturi faces growing pressure to step down after he publicly criticized the government over the alleged abduction of his son.

A seasoned politician, Muturi has a background as a former magistrate and served as National Assembly Speaker for 10 years. His alliance with Kenya Kwanza, through the Democratic Party (DP), could also hinder attempts to remove him from office.

Though the coalition agreement doesn’t prevent parliamentary action, it remains a legal document that could be used in court to challenge any impeachment efforts.

Mount Kenya MPs who supported former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment have kept a distance due to potential backlash. As Muturi hails from the same region, his removal could escalate tensions.

Unlike Gachagua, who joined Kenya Kwanza without his party, several other Cabinet officials entered with their own political parties, including Muturi, Alfred Mutua, Moses Wetang’ula, and Amason Kingi.

In the event the exit clause creates complications, Muturi may be forced to resign and recommend another DP member for a Cabinet post.

In May 2022, a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal invalidated Muturi’s agreement with Kenya Kwanza and his position as DP party leader. However, the High Court overturned the ruling in July 2022, preserving his alliance with Kenya Kwanza ahead of the elections.

Now facing criticism after challenging the government, Muturi dared MPs to bring forward an impeachment motion. “Bring it on, at my age, I’m not the type to respond to inexperienced politicians,” he said.

The pressure on Muturi intensified when National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro revealed plans to impeach him if he refused to step down. Osoro also demanded an apology, accusing Muturi of disrespecting the Kenya Kwanza government by airing his grievances publicly.

Kenya’s Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has traveled to Mozambique to represent the country at the inauguration of Mozambique’s President-Elect Daniel Francisco Chapo.

In a statement made on Wednesday, January 15, Kindiki shared that before leaving, he met with Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The minister was on his way back to Somalia from Cairo, Egypt. Kindiki stated, “I am traveling to Maputo to represent Kenya at the inauguration of Mozambique’s President-Elect. “I am my own man. My interpretation of the Deputy President’s role is not to oppose the President. The Constitution doesn’t mandate it, nor does any law. If the President seeks my advice, my duty is to provide it faithfully. That doesn’t mean I have to do it publicly. My loyalty is to the oath I swore,” Kindiki asserted on Thursday.
