Govt Pathologist Johnsen Oduor Releases DNA Results of 21 Endarasha Victims

Chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed on Wednesday that DNA tests for the 21 pupils who lost their lives in the Hillside Endarasha Fire Tragedy have been completed.

During a press briefing at Naromoru Hospital in Nyeri, Oduor shared that the process of notifying the parents had already begun.

A team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), along with counselors, has been sent to assist in the release of the bodies to their families, according to the pathologist.

Oduor expressed, “We are pleased to announce that DNA results for the 21 victims from Endarasha Academy have been received, and all identities have been confirmed.”

He added, “We are currently in the process of contacting the parents, and a team of DCI officers and counselors is assisting in the process.”

In addition, Oduor announced that after all the bodies are released, the government will provide support for the victims’ burial arrangements.

This update follows the recent government approval for the school’s reopening.

The committee investigating the tragedy has recommended reducing the number of boarding students to alleviate overcrowding.

This decision comes after DCI officers investigating the fire handed the school back to the board of management for rebuilding efforts.

School owner David Kinyua shared that once the school reopens, all parents will be invited to a prayer meeting to discuss the next steps.

Kinyua also revealed that instead of renovating the destroyed dormitory, a new one will be built.

“We have arranged for the students to be provided with essentials, including mattresses, boxes, uniforms, and shoes, so they will return just as they left,” Kinyua stated.

Govt Pathologist Johansen Oduor Reveals Grim Update on Endarasha Tragedy as Death Toll Climbs

Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed plans on Saturday to begin autopsies for victims of the Hillside Endarasha fire tragedy.

Speaking in Nyeri County, Oduor confirmed the retrieval of bodies was complete, and postmortems would start on Tuesday, September 10.

Oduor highlighted that the victims’ bodies were so severely burned that identifying the students was challenging.

“We’ve concluded the recovery of the 19 bodies from the fire scene, all placed in body bags,” Oduor said.

“These bodies will be transferred to Naromoru Hospital for autopsies. The burns are extensive, making identification almost impossible.”

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, at the same briefing, updated the death toll to 21, following two more deaths as pupils succumbed to their injuries.

Mwaura confirmed that out of the 156 students who lived in the affected dormitory, 139 were accounted for.

He also mentioned that investigations are ongoing, with more information to be provided soon.

“On behalf of the Kenyan government, we offer our deepest condolences to the grieving families,” Mwaura stated.

“It’s heartbreaking to lose so many young lives.”

Mwaura urged locals near the school who may have rescued any students to bring them to the official search area.

“All relevant authorities are tirelessly working to ensure the safe return of the students, with continuous updates to follow,” he added.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor has revealed that the bodies found at the Kware dumpsite did not exhibit bullet wounds, contrary to initial speculation. The examination has uncovered disturbing details about the condition of the remains.

“Some of the recovered limbs were amputated from the knees down, comprising two right legs and two left legs,” explained Dr Oduor, prompting questions about the method of dismemberment and disposal of the victims.

Further elaborating, Dr Oduor stated, “Three of the recovered parts were from the waist to the knee, while another torso from the waist up was determined to have been strangled to death.” Alongside these dismembered limbs and torsos, a complete female body was also discovered.

Dr Oduor noted, “We also examined the intact body of a female who had suffered head injuries,” suggesting that these injuries may have been the cause of her death.

In efforts to identify the victims and piece together the remains, DNA samples are being collected. “We are taking DNA samples to match each piece accurately to determine the total number of bodies,” Dr Oduor explained, emphasizing the importance of this step in establishing the identities of the victims.

However, Dr Oduor expressed frustration that the advanced decomposition of the bodies has significantly complicated the investigation. “Severely decomposed bodies pose challenges in determining the cause of death due to postmortem changes where tissues are lost,” he lamented.

The natural decay processes have further hindered efforts to ascertain the exact causes of death and the sequence of events surrounding these tragic circumstances.

The discoveries at the Kware dumpsite have deeply unsettled the community, with many awaiting updates from authorities as they work to unravel this harrowing mystery.

Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor Reveals Kware Deaths Preliminary Findings

Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor started postmortem examinations on mutilated bodies found at the Kware dumpsite in Nairobi on Monday.

Addressing the media, Oduor stated that one body had been severed into nearly equal halves.

He indicated that the victim’s body was mutilated in the lower abdomen area using a sharp object.

Oduor revealed that the victim might have died from excessive bleeding caused by a head injury inflicted by a blunt object.

The pathologist mentioned that examinations on the remaining bodies would start on Wednesday, July 17, after conducting X-rays.

“This process will continue until completion since some body parts are missing. This will help us determine the number of victims and their causes of death,” Oduor stated. He dismissed any similarities to the murder of Rita Waeni six months ago.

Oduor explained that in Waeni’s case, multiple body parts, including the legs and the trunk, were dismembered.

“Waeni’s body parts were separately mutilated,” Johansen Oduor clarified.

His comments followed the arrest of a prime suspect linked to the deaths of over nine women, whose bodies were found at a Mukuru dumpsite in Nairobi, announced by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin.

Amin revealed the suspect was apprehended early Monday outside a club in Kayole, Nairobi while watching the Euro 2024 final match.

“As we arrested him, he was attempting to lure another victim. Ongoing investigations will help us locate the victim,” Amin stated.

“We anticipate more arrests as we believe the suspect had accomplices. We will broaden our investigation,” he added.

Dr Johansen Oduor: Why I Love Spending Time With the Dead

If Johansen Oduor followed his father’s wishes to become a teacher, he would not be the senior government pathologist in Kenya today.

Oduor, who grew up in informal settlements around Nairobi recalls how his father was shocked on learning that he wanted to become a doctor, to help his community.

“The reason I chose to be a doctor is growing up in Eastlands there are a lot of shortages and challenges in healthcare centres. I decided to help the community by being a doctor,” Oduor told NTV on Saturday, adding that he never considered a pathology as a field during his studies.

According to Oduor, there was a lot of stigma in the pathology field.

“By the time I was finishing my university master’s, I didn’t want to do pathology. With pathology, there is a lot of discrimination, you are feared,” voiced Oduor.

In an unexpected move after his graduation, he was posted to the mortuary by the Ministry of Health.

“It was my first time entering a morgue. The smell, I almost failed to go back.”

The chief pathologist recalled that his desire to help people motivated him to return to the morgue.

‘I looked at the people who were coming to the mortuary were people from Kibera, Mathare places I grew up in. So I thought if I don’t help these people who will?”

An appointment to his current position also came as a shock to Oduor. “I didn’t expect to be appointed as Government chief pathologist. It was stressful,” he said.

“Since I had decided to help citizens, like when I had decided to help people when I was posted at City Mortuary, I affirmed that I could do this.”

Speaking to NTV, he stated that there are controversial cases that generate a lot of interest, but has never witnessed a case where a bribe was issued to alter the results of a post-mortem.

“In a controversial case, since my policy is openness, I tell the relatives to bring their qualified doctor and maybe a relative to oversee the process,” he narrated.

The pathologist noted that by the Criminal Procedure Code, Section 386 a police report is made when a person dies tragically. The police conduct their investigations and go to pathologists to assist in determining the cause of death.

In his career, Oduor terms Rita Waeni’s murder and Shakahola cult deaths as the most difficult cases he has handled.

“This is the first time I have come across such an incident. I have never come across such in my forensic life,” said Oduor on Waeni’s post-modern examination.

On the Shakahola massacre, Oduor said it was difficult due to the scope of work and the level of inhumanity.

“It was hard because of the extent of the work. We were there for quite some time last year. Also the cases of children, it was so inhuman.”

The senior pathologist also shared that he, like everybody else, fears death.

“Everyone fears death. I think about death. Death is unexpected,” he said.

When he is not in a morgue, Oduor is a father of three, who likes to listen to music and watch movies. His favorite jam is Shaggy’s Mr. Bombastic.

Other than his parents, Oduor also considers the late Prof. George Magoha as his hero.

“The late Prof. Magoha was my hero since I was an undergraduate. He looked strict but he was a kind man, ready to assist when needed.”

Pathologist Johansen Oduor Discloses What Killed Boni Khalwale’s Worker

On Saturday, Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor verified that Kizito Moi, an employee of Senator Boni Khalwale, met his demise as a result of an attack by a combatant bull.

Speaking to the media outside Kakamega Funeral Parlor, Oduor refuted claims that the employee had been fatally stabbed with a knife.

“What I found is that the late Kizito had injuries, one on the forehead on the right side, and another one on the anterior neck and the inner thigh of the left leg,” stated the Pathologist.

“Looking at these injuries, they were penetrating and also had some features which included some bruising around them,” he added.

As per the pathologist’s findings, the injuries resembled those typically observed when a blunt object penetrates a victim’s body. Consequently, the pathologist attributed these injuries to the horns of an animal.

Oduor had to perform a second autopsy due to concerns raised about the initial examination conducted by a local pathologist.

“So, from all these findings, we can conclude that indeed the initial autopsy was correct and it was caused by an animal other than something which stabbed the person like something which was being alleged that was a knife or something like that,” Oduor stated.

During the unveiling of the second autopsy findings, a physician advocating for the complainants was among the attendees. The representative of the family agreed with Oduor’s conclusions.

When discussing the issue, Khalwale commended the dedication of both professionals and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

“I want to thank the pathologist and the team of investigators from the region and county and the homicide squad from Nairobi too,” Khalwale commented.

“I am glad that Doctor Oduor, the government pathologist, has closed this case and I can now pass my condolences to the family.”

The lifeless remains of the individual were discovered within the barn, and initial inquiries suggest that Kizito met his demise at the hands of a bull.

Khalwale killed the animal with a spear and permitted residents to divide the meat among themselves, asserting that it was by his community’s cultural tradition to slaughter the bull.
