Haaland sent De Bruyne away after seven minutes for a sublime opening goal.

At Etihad Stadium, Manchester City displayed a masterclass to defeat Premier League leaders Arsenal and deliver a massive psychological blow in the title race.

The confrontation billed as a potential title decider turned out to be a humiliating rout.

Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne’s devastating partnership inspired Pep Guardiola’s squad, which is now two points behind Arsenal with two games in hand.

Haaland sent De Bruyne away for a slick opening goal after seven minutes, and Arsenal withstood a constant barrage of attacks until John Stones scored from a corner in first-half stoppage time, the goal being awarded by VAR after it was initially ruled offside.

Haaland was outstanding throughout and set up De Bruyne for City’s third goal in the 54th minute. De Bruyne finished elegantly between the legs of Arsenal defender Rob Holding.

Holding scored a late equalizer for Arsenal before Haaland, who had been denied four times by Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale earlier in the game, capped a memorable evening with his 49th City goal.

City can take the lead with a win at Fulham on Sunday, while Arsenal must find a way to end a four-game winless streak in the league at a crucial point in the season.

The city appears unstoppable.

City still has work to do to retain their Premier League title, but in the most important match of the season, they sent a resounding message.

Guardiola was as fired up as his players early on, raging in his technical area and even lecturing goalkeeper Ederson after De Bruyne gave them the lead.

The city was magnificent as they tore holes in the Arsenal defense, the Gunners miraculously surviving all manner of close calls after the opening goal before Stones’ header gave City the cushion they deserved.

Haaland had a rare night when his golden touch in front of goal deserted him until virtually the last kick of the game – although Ramsdale played a role in that – but the Norwegian showed how much his all-around game has improved under Guardiola by exhibiting link-up play, providing two assists for De Bruyne, and playing with a constant air of menace.

And De Bruyne once again demonstrated his enduring class with two accurate goals.

The title race is not yet over, and no one at City will be complacent, but this performance was indicative of a team on a mission to retain their crown and who now have the momentum on their side.

Another opportunity missed by the Gunners

A few short weeks ago, Arsenal’s title challenge appeared likely to result in the first Premier League championship since 2003-04.

But that was before they squandered a two-goal lead at Liverpool, repeated the error at West Ham, and then stumbled to a 3-3 draw at home against struggling Southampton.

Mikel Arteta’s squad was on the receiving end of a humiliating loss against City, despite having the opportunity to reclaim the Premier League lead.

The gap between the two teams resembled a chasm until the final seconds when Haaland finally scored. Arsenal appeared nervous in the face of City’s intensity and threat.

The Gunners have sorely missed the defensive authority of injured William Saliba, while their attack was barely deserving of the name until it was too late.

Arsenal has been exceptional this season, so it will not be a disgrace if they fall short against City.

If they fail – and remember, there is still a chance – their recent decline in performance will undoubtedly leave them lamenting a tremendous missed opportunity.

If they are to recover from this trouncing, they must act swiftly and hope that City makes a mistake at some point.

Nevertheless, based on the evidence, it appears highly unlikely.
