LSK President Faith Odhiambo Reveals Shocking Police Charges Against Protesters, Calls for Fair Treatment

The President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Faith Odhiambo, expressed profound dismay at the decision to charge detained protesters with a criminal offense.

LSK’s president revealed that protesters held at Central Police Station were facing allegations of mugging.

She indicated that lawyers had sought clarification from the police regarding these charges, criticizing the authorities for potentially violating the law.

Consequently, she urged the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) not to pursue legal action against arrested protesters based on unfounded accusations.

“This morning, we arrived at Central Police Station at 8 am to follow up on the release. To our shock, peaceful demonstrators were accused of mugging without any substantiation,” stated the LSK president, calling on the ODPP to prevent unjust and false charges against Kenyan citizens.

Additionally, she affirmed the Society’s commitment to providing legal representation for peaceful protesters detained during Tuesday’s demonstrations nationwide.

Meanwhile, in various regions, police released some protesters following interventions.

“Our teams across all 23 counties where demonstrations were reported have been tirelessly ensuring no protesters face unlawful detention. We successfully secured the release of demonstrators in Kitengela, Kahawa, and Mombasa, and will continue monitoring and offering necessary legal support,” she noted.

She also encouraged Kenyans with information about individuals still in police custody to contact officers via the toll-free number 0800720434.

LSK President Odhiambo Reports 5 am Abduction of Paul Mwangi Alias Jiji

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo reported on Monday, July 1, that Paul Mwangi Wambu, also known as Jiji, had been kidnapped.

The LSK President specified that the abduction took place at 5 am in Githurai.

Mwangi has been a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, particularly regarding the recently repealed Finance Bill 2024.

“This must stop. Release Paul immediately,” demanded the LSK President.

In an interview with Gossipa2z.com, Faith Odhiambo disclosed that Mwangi was taken from his home, and his location remains unknown.

She mentioned that Mwangi had participated in youth-led protests to urge the government to lower the taxes imposed on Kenyans.

His abduction occurred just hours after former Nandi Hill Member of Parliament Alfred Keter was taken in broad daylight after leaving the church.

Keter was forcibly removed from his SUV by plainclothes men, raising concerns of abduction.

Later, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a statement confirming that Keter was in police custody.

During a Sunday roundtable media interview, President William Ruto dismissed claims of police abductions.

He asserted that most individuals rumored to have been abducted were arrested by the police and either released or charged within 24 hours.

Faith Odhiambo Elected New LSK President

Faith Odhiambo has been elected the new Law Society of Kenya president

Odhiambo who served as Vice President of the society ahead of the polls was elected in Thursday’s elections.

She becomes the 51st President of the Council, succeeding Eric Theuri.

The race for the presidency was between five candidates: Peter Wanyama, Carolyne Kamende, Faith Odhiambo, Harriet Mboche, and Kipkoech Bernhard Ngetich.

During her campaign period, Odhiambo underscored her commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the council remains a strong defender of legal principles.

Odhiambo entered the election day with the blessings of ODM leader Raila Odinga and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna who endorsed her for the seat.

“An engaging conversation with Faith Odhiambo, LSK Vice President, and aspiring LSK President. Her commitment to upholding the rule of law and advocating for good governance principles is truly inspiring. I wish her all the best and she has my full support,” the former Prime minister said after meeting her Wednesday.

Raychelle Omamo was the last woman to hold the top LSK job from 2001 to 2003.

The most recent presidents were Isaac Okero (2016-2018); Allen Gichuhi (2018-2020); Nelson Havi (2020-2021) and outgoing president Eric Theuri (2022-2024).

Thursday’s elections were conducted across the country and were overseen by the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Other positions where new members were to be elected included vice president and council members who included three representatives of the general membership of the society, four upcountry representatives, three Nairobi representatives, and one Coast representative.

Members also elected LSK male representatives to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). Exiting LSK President Theuri is seeking that mandate.
