In Thika, Kiambu County, tension erupted on Friday as supporters of Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a and Kamenu ward MCA Peter Mburu engaged in violent clashes concerning the construction of the Kiganjo market.

The initial dispute between MP Alice Ng’ang’a and MCA Peter Mburu quickly spiraled into chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and reports of potential fatalities.

At the heart of the conflict were conflicting claims over the credit for the market project. Ng’ang’a insisted that the National Government had allocated Ksh.55 million for the project, as pledged by President William Ruto.

Ng’ang’a leveled accusations against the Kiambu County Government, led by Governor Kimani Wamatangi, accusing them of trying to seize control of the initiative.

Tensions peaked when Ng’ang’a and her fellow MPs attempted to formally kick off the project, only to find Mburu and his supporters already laying claim to the construction site, sparking a confrontation that saw stones thrown and tear gas deployed by police in an attempt to quell the violence.

The severity of the clash was underscored by an aide to Ng’ang’a being rushed to the hospital with serious injuries amidst the chaos.

MP Alice Ng’ang’a, accompanied by other MPs including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu), Gabriel Kagombe (Gatundu South), Elijah Njoroge (Gatundu North), and Ngoliba Ward MCA Joachim Njama, spearheaded the launch of the market amidst the turmoil.

On Wednesday, President William Ruto criticized Thika Town Member of Parliament Alice Ng’ang’a and Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi for their public political discord.

This disagreement unfolded shortly after the lawmaker declared her plans to challenge the county chief in the upcoming general election.

While speaking to the residents during the improvement of Uplands-Kijabe-Maai Mahiu roads in Lari, Kiambu County, Ruto reprimanded the two leaders, emphasizing that the ongoing project was not the appropriate forum for their mutual criticisms.

Ruto pledged to organize a meeting between the two leaders to help them resolve their differences.

“This is not the right time to politic, we need to think about how we can make our country move forward. I will make sure I sit down with these leaders and ensure they read from the same script,” Ruto noted.

Ruto had to step in when Alice Ng’ang’a openly criticized Governor Wamatangi during her address at the rally. In her speech, the MP pledged to oppose the leadership of the Governor.

Ng’ang’a went as far as pledging to compete for the Kiambu Gubernatorial position with the specific aim of preventing Kimani Wamatangi from keeping his seat.

“Your Excellency, I don’t know how to sugarcoat, this County needs peace and for everything to get back to working seamlessly,” Ng’ang’a noted.

“I will resist Governor Wamatangi here in Kiambu, and I will be the next governor of Kiambu County,” she added.

Three months following the Deputy President’s efforts to convene a group of Kiambu leaders and address political disagreements that posed a risk to service delivery in the densely populated county, a public confrontation has now erupted.

During that period, Gachagua conveyed that President Ruto expressed worry about the situation in Kiambu. In response, the Deputy President pledged to resolve the ongoing disagreements among leaders from the area.

“The Ruto administration roots for a strong devolution, and therefore, we have no room for squabbles that will derail service delivery to the people,” Gachagua stated.
