Swedish Prosecutors Close Investigation Linking Kylian Mbappe to Rape Allegations Due to Lack of Evidence

An investigation into accusations of rape and sexual assault in Stockholm, which Swedish media linked to Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe, has been dropped due to insufficient evidence, according to a Swedish prosecutor’s announcement on Thursday.

The 25-year-old French football star, renowned as one of the world’s top players, visited Stockholm from October 9-11 with a group after being left out of France’s Nations League squad.

On October 15, Sweden’s prosecution authority revealed it was probing an alleged incident at an upscale Stockholm hotel on October 10, without naming the individual under investigation.

Prominent Swedish media outlets, including Aftonbladet, Expressen, and public broadcaster SVT, identified Mbappe as the accused.

Prosecutor Marina Chirakova stated that the evidence was inadequate to continue the investigation, leading to its closure, without naming Mbappe explicitly.

Chirakova clarified that the suspect had not been formally accused or notified of any crime.

Mbappe’s attorney previously expressed the player’s shock at being associated with the investigation in October.

In his first public statement about the case on the French television show Clique on Sunday, Mbappe denied any involvement.

“I haven’t received any summons or notice—I’m not involved,” he asserted.

Reports from Aftonbladet noted that Mbappe and his group dined at a restaurant before heading to a nightclub one evening. The alleged victim filed a complaint on October 12 after seeking medical treatment.

Expressen revealed that authorities confiscated several clothing items as evidence, including women’s underwear, black trousers, and a black top. Photographs showed officers exiting the hotel with brown evidence bags.

Mbappe has faced challenges this season after transferring to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain, struggling to deliver his best performance consistently.

Nevertheless, the French forward contributed a goal in Real Madrid’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta on Tuesday, rekindling the team’s Champions League ambitions.

Alongside Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, Mbappe scored in Bergamo, lifting Madrid to 20th place in the Champions League standings with nine points from six matches.

A defeat would have jeopardized the Spanish club’s chances of securing a play-off spot in the competition.

Mbappe remains one of the most sought-after talents in football, having clinched the World Cup at just 19 years old in 2018 and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, where France narrowly lost on penalties.

During his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe formed part of a star-studded attacking lineup with Lionel Messi and Neymar.
