Suspension of Uhuru National Delegate Conference Notice: Kanini Kega Takes Action

On Wednesday, May 10, Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Kanini Kega suspended the National Delegates Conference (NDC) called for by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kega, who claimed to be the secretary general, stated in a notice that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Jubilee ratified his decision.

Monday, May 22 was the scheduled date for the Uhuru NDC.

“Take notice that the Jubilee Party National Executive Committee (NEC) has suspended the notice for the Special National Delegates Conference that was published in the print media on April 29,” read part of the notice.

As a result, Kega, who signed the notice as secretary general, stated that the NEC would convene a special meeting for all party delegates within the next few days.

“The party will issue a notice convening a Special National Delegates Conference by the NEC’s February 2023 resolution,” he stated.

After being sued by Former nominated MP Hassan Osman over the May 22 meeting, Kega’s action dealt the embattled party leader another blow.

The former lawmaker argued in his petition to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) that Uhuru’s call for NDC was illegal. He also requested a suspension of the meeting.

“I would like to state that the respondents have attempted to remove or alter the party’s constitution, membership, and leadership in a manner that is unlawful, illegal, and non-procedural,” he said.

Uhuru and Jeremiah Kioni, the general secretary of his faction, had not yet responded to the court petition and Kanini Kega’s notice.

Notably, the NEC removed both leaders, replacing Uhuru with MP nominee Sabina Chege. Kega, on the other hand, replaced Kioni.

However, the duo maintained that they were still in office, arguing that the party’s constitution prohibited the NEC from removing the party leader.

“The rebel group’s secret meetings, minutes, and resolutions are null and void,” Kioni stated, and he even wrote a letter to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties requesting that it not recognize the new officials.

After visiting the party headquarters in Kileleshwa in April 2023 to defend Kioni against Kega’s factions allied with President William Ruto, Uhuru’s troubles began.
