Survivor’s Story: Praying in Car During Sachangwan Accident

A survivor of the Sachangwan crash described the final moments preceding the gruesome accident that claimed six lives on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway in the early hours of Monday, May 15.

Ezekiel Ombaso stated to the press that trouble ensued shortly after the driver was unable to navigate the barriers installed at the blind spot.

In addition, the driver appeared to lose control and accelerate while hitting bumps, causing passengers to scream and pray for their lives.

He noted, however, that some passengers attempted to reassure the driver and persuade him to find a safer way to stop the vehicle.

“As we approached a certain barrier at Molo, we realized that the vehicle’s brakes had failed as it descended the slopes and hit the bumps at high speed. Therefore, we began to wail and pray.”

“Others encouraged the driver and advised him to search for a safer way to stop the vehicle. “As the matatu was descending the slope, it suddenly rolled, and I lost consciousness,” Obbaso explained.

Susan Wanjiku, the administrator of Molo Hospital, disclosed that 12 patients remained after one succumbed during treatment.

She added that the hospital was attempting to reach the parents of two surviving children.

Unfortunately, one of the thirteen casualties died while receiving treatment. We’ve admitted twelve patients, including eight men, two women, and two children. All of them are stable.

“We have yet to locate the children’s parents. We’ve reached out to the police and Kenya Red Cross for assistance with the operation,” she explained.

At the time of the accident, Mwenda Muthamia, commander of the Molo Police Department, stated that four men and one woman perished on the scene. The vehicle was traveling from Nairobi to Malaba at 2:00 a.m. when it veered off the road and struck a curb.

The deceased was transported to a mortuary in the county of Nakuru for preservation and identification by their families.

In addition, the matatu was towed to the Molo Police Station where it was inspected by traffic police officers.
