Sudan Recalls Ambassador Amid President Ruto’s Controversial Host of Paramilitary Leader
Sudan withdrew its ambassador from Nairobi on Thursday as a form of objection to Kenyan President William Ruto’s decision to hold discussions with paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, according to the country’s acting foreign minister.
Daglo, whose Rapid Support Forces have conflicted with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s regular army since April, is currently traveling to African capitals on his inaugural foreign visit during the conflict.
He has already been to Uganda, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, and also visited Kenya. Currently, he is in South Africa, which has caused frustration for Burhan. Burhan’s administration has been losing ground to paramilitaries in recent months and is keen on preventing them from gaining international legitimacy.
In a statement carried by the official SUNA news agency, Sudan’s acting foreign minister Ali al-Sadiq said the ambassador had been recalled “for consultations in protest of the official reception organised by the Kenyan government for the leader of the rebel militia”.

He said those consultations would “cover all possibilities for the outcome of Sudan’s relations with Kenya”.
The relationship between Burhan and the Kenyan government has been tense for several months because Nairobi aims to maintain communication with Daglo to play a mediating role in the conflict.
In a January 1 address, the army chief warned that African governments hosting visits by “these killers” were “making themselves a partner in the murder of the Sudanese people”.
The conflict has resulted in the death of over 12,190 individuals, as per a cautious calculation by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. Additionally, it has compelled over seven million people to evacuate from their residences, as reported by the United Nations.
Attempts to mediate have come to a halt due to intense hostility between the opposing generals.
While Burhan’s government issues statements as the Sudanese ruling body, the Rapid Support Forces led by Daglo hold sway over the streets of Khartoum, along with the majority of Darfur and a significant portion of Al-Jazira, which was formerly Sudan’s key agricultural region before the conflict.
