Sudan Bans Imports from Kenya Over Rebel Group Support

Sudan has suspended all imports from Kenya following Kenyaโ€™s decision to host the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rebel group fighting against the Sudanese army.

In a notice issued on Thursday, Sudan announced an immediate restriction on all imports from Kenya. The ban applies to goods entering through ports, railways, and air transport.

“The import of all products from Kenya via all ports, crossings, airports, and entry points is suspended starting from this date until further notice,” stated Sudan’s Acting Minister of Trade and Supplies, Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali.

The minister explained that Kenyaโ€™s decision to host and support the RSF in Nairobi was an act of defiance. He added that the move was necessary to protect Sudanโ€™s national interests and security.

The ban is effective immediately, with all relevant authorities in Sudan instructed to enforce it. Kenya is a major supplier of agricultural products, food items, and pharmaceuticals to Sudan.

The RSF and other rebel groups signed a political charter on February 22 in Nairobi, forming a parallel administration to the Sudanese government. Two days later, Sudanโ€™s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussein Al Fadil, warned that Sudan might impose restrictions on Kenyan imports.

During a press conference on February 24, Al Fadil stated that Sudan would submit a formal complaint to the African Union and other international organizations, urging them to act against Kenya.

“This is due to the interference in Sudan’s internal affairs and the hosting of events for the terrorist RSF militia and its allies, which threaten Sudan’s security, stability, and unity,” he said.

Al Fadil added that Sudan was considering further economic sanctions against Kenya. He also noted that President William Rutoโ€™s actions violated international agreements, including those of the United Nations, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Despite the ban, the Kenyan government has yet to issue a response.
