Stampede at Kericho Stadium Injures 6, Including Child, Ahead of President Ruto’s Mashujaa Event

At least six people, including a child, were injured in a stampede at Kericho Green Stadium as people rushed to enter in advance of President William Ruto’s Mashujaa celebration.

According to reports, the stampede occurred at Gate C of the stadium as thousands of locals raced to enter the venue at 1 a.m.

The region voted decisively for Ruto in last year’s elections, and the rush may be a result of his popularity in the county.

The six were transported to the Kericho County Referral Hospital for medical treatment. Ruto is anticipated to appear at the location at 9:00 a.m.

Following the incident, the police were required to restore order at the gates.

This was made more difficult by the muddy sidewalks outside the stadium, which were the result of Thursday evening’s and night’s torrential rain.

Residents reported that the throng overwhelmed the police as thousands attempted to enter the 10,000-seat stadium.

According to the Ministry of Sports, the stadium was recently upgraded for the event for 400 million Kenyan shillings.

The venue was already packed at 6 a.m., with thousands of Kenyans still waiting outside the stadium.

Ruto is anticipated to appear at the venue at 9 a.m. to lead the nation in its 60th commemoration of the day designated to honor the country’s heroes.

It is also anticipated that the President will formally launch Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Additionally, the Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) program will be introduced today. Under the program, the CHVs will be assigned to make house calls to provide Kenyans with primary medical care.
