SRC Stands Firm on Salary Raise Amidst Cost of Living Concerns

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has defended its decision to implement a salary increase for State and public officers beginning July 1. Despite the high cost of living for other Kenyans.

Saturday during a press conference, SRC chairwoman Lyn Mengich. Stated that the commission was only implementing the third of a four-part cycle of agreed-upon salary increases for government employees.

She went on to say that during the Covid-19 period, raises were frozen, but they have since resumed.

“The commission set a four-year review cycle (for increments), and we are now in the third review cycleโ€ฆthere was a salary structure freeze due to Covid-19โ€ฆ the commission has reviewed the Salaries as required,” Mengich stated.

However, she acknowledged the issue with the escalating wage bill. Stating that the compensation of all public officers has reached Ksh.998 billion and is on track to reach Ksh1 trillion.

“The wage bill is influenced by the increase in the number of employees. There are approximately one million public officers in the country,” Mengich stated.

She stated that salaries will be standardized to the 50th percentile.

Mengich stated, “We will also evaluate the job requirements and their relative value to determine the desired salary for each public employee.”

The SRC’s remarks are made in the midst of public outrage over salary increases.

Friday, President William Ruto rejected the SRC’s proposal to increase the salaries of top government officials. Including Cabinet members and members of parliament, arguing that the disparity between low- and high-earning public servants should be narrowed.

He rejected the proposal and instructed the commission to devise methods for aligning the salaries of government officials with international norms.

Concurrently, the head of state approved the SRC’s proposal to raise the monthly dues of the lowest cadre of government employees.
