Sports CS Namwamba Shakes Things Up: Azziad, Churchill, Akothee Axed from Talanta Hela Council
Ababu Namwamba, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports, and the Arts, has disbanded the Talanta Hela Council and Technical Committees, rescinding the appointments of popular TikToker Azziad Nasenya, comedian Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki, and singers Akothee and Wahu Kagwi, among others.
In a Gazette Notice dated June 9, 2023, Namwamba revoked the formation of the Talanta Hela Council.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts has revoked Gazette Notice No 1649 of 2023,” reads the notice.
The move by Namwamba comes weeks after the High Court halted the implementation of the Talanta Hela Council pending the outcome of a court petition.
Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled on May 23, 2023, “Pending the hearing and determination of this application inter parties, interim orders be and are hereby issued suspending the special issue of the Kenya Gazette Notice 1649(Vol. CXXV No.32) dated February 10, 2023, publishing the establishment of the Talanta Hela Council and its Technical Committees and subsequent appointments for three years effective from February 10, 2023.”
Mugane argues that the appointments constitute a violation of Article 10 of the Kenyan Constitution and a breach of the public trust placed in the Cabinet Secretary by Kenyan citizens.

The Talanta Hela Council and Technical Committees were to serve for three years.
Namwamba had established the Creatives Technical Committee, which was to be chaired by the comedian Churchill and serve for three years.
Akinyi Odongo, Jimmi Gathu, Catherine Kamau, Esther ‘Akothee’ Akoth, Kizito Makhande, Azziad Nasenya, Rosemary Wahu Kagwi, Awadhi Salim Awadhi, Douglas Kipkirui, Langat Susan Ekasiba were committee members.
Similarly, to revitalize the sports industry, the CS established the Sports Technical Committee, which will be led by renowned journalist Carol Radul.
Boniface Ambani, Julius Kiplagat Yego, Neddy Kutsuru, Alfred Makotsi, Sammy Tiyoi Shollei, Collins Kale, Kevin Mutai, Shilovelo Winna Shilavula, Daniel Nakeor Losiru, and Staicy Shariff Ochieng were to comprise Radul’s team.
