Ababu Namwamba has been appointed to the Global Leadership Council of Generation Unlimited (GenU) of the United Nations.

Following his appointment, Namwamba is scheduled to attend his first Global Leadership Council meeting on September 21 in New York, United States, during the 78th United Nations General Assembly.

Kenya’s National Youth Council (NYC) verified the appointment of the CS and congratulated him on his new position in a statement.

“The Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports Congratulates the appointment by His Excellency President Dr. William Ruto, CGH to the Global Leadership Council of Generation Unlimited, the premier United Nations platform for advancing the agenda of young people globally,” NYC’s post read in parts.

CS Namwamba joins a hand-picked team of global leaders in GenU’s council, including UNICEF’s Executive Director Catherine M. Russell, Rwanda’s Youth Minister Abdallah Utumatwishima, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Audrey Azoulay, and Vice President of the Agriculture, Human and Social Development Complex at the African Development Bank Group Dr. Beth Dunford, among others.

The organization advocates for adolescent connectivity, employment, entrepreneurship, and social impact.

“At GenU, we’re on a mission to unleash the full potential of the world’s 1.8 billion young people. By providing them with the right skills and opportunities, they can be at the forefront of creating a better, more equitable world,” reads a statement from the organization’s website.

In terms of connectivity, GenU aims to connect all young people and institutions to the Internet so that young people have access to education in every corner of the globe.

In addition, the organization seeks to promote youth employment by forming partnerships with governments, businesses, multilateral organizations, and young people to close the skills gap.

“Generation Unlimited is supporting every youth to have access to learning, skilling, and livelihood opportunities by radically scaling up access to world-class digital solutions that meet every young person’s unique learning needs and context,” GenU’s website states.

Following his recent nomination to the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Task Force, Namwamba has been appointed to GenU.

The Task Force will be charged with implementing Commonwealth Youth Programmes across the globe for a four-year term.

Both positions equip the CS to advocate on a global platform for Kenyan Youth.
