Spanish Princess Honors Kipchoge with Ksh7.4 Million Award

The Spanish foundation awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for sports in 2023 to Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge on Thursday, May 18th.

According to the foundation, Kipchoge received Ksh7.4 million (fifty thousand euros) as one of the winners.

Kipchoge also received a Joan Miró sculpture. Representing and symbolizing the Award, a diploma, and insignia from Princess Leonor of Asturias, who was born in October 2005.

“By these principles, the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports will be given to careers that have become an example of the benefits that practicing sports can bring to people by promoting, fostering, and advancing the sport and a sense of solidarity and dedication,” the foundation stated.

“Each Princess of Asturias Award consists of a Joan Miró sculpture representing and symbolizing the Award, a diploma, an insignia, and a 50,000-euro cash prize,” the document continued.

A sixteen-member jury in Spain selected Kipchoge as the winner after reaching their decision.

Kipchoge stated, upon receiving the award, that it inspired him to leave a lasting athletic legacy.

He extended his gratitude to the 18-year-old princess for the Princess of Asturias Award.

“Receiving the Princess of Asturias Award is an incredible honor. To be included on a list of extraordinary laureates from diverse backgrounds. It motivates me to leave a lasting legacy in this world through running because a running world is a more peaceful, happier, and healthier world,” Kipchoge wrote.

The marathon legend continued, “I would like to thank Her Royal Highness The Princess of Asturias and her parents, Their Majesties The King and Queen of Spain, for this honor.”

Kipchoge has won ten of the most prestigious marathons in the world, including Berlin and London four times each.

During the Ineos race in Vienna, Austria, he currently holds the record for completing a marathon in less than two hours.

Before hanging up his running shoes, Kipchoge hopes to break his 2019 record of 1:59:40 in Vienna.
