Somalia’s Ex- Foreign Minister Fawzia Adam Challenges Raila for AUC Chair Job

Fawzia Adam, the ex-foreign Minister of Somalia, has announced her candidacy for the position of African Union Chairman. She aims to challenge the current Chair, Moussa Faki from Chad, whose term concludes in 2025.

Fawzia is set to enter the competition against Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio, who declared his candidacy on February 15, 2024.

It has been reported that Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre have given their approval to Fawzia’s candidacy, recognizing her expertise in governance matters.

Daudi Aweis, the Minister for Information in Somalia, praised Somalia’s choice to nominate a candidate for the position of AU chairperson, expressing confidence in her strong candidacy for the role.

“Following key diplomatic achievements such as lifting the arms embargo, debt relief and joining the EAC, Somalia is now well-placed to play a major role in the world,” Aweis stated as quoted by Somalia news publication Garowe Online.

“Delighted to put forward veteran diplomat Fawzia Tusuf as our nominee for the top position at the AU.”

Fawzia, who held the positions of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia from 2012 to 2014, was also praised for her efforts in advancing peace initiatives in the area.

“With her visionary leadership, she aims to bring Africa to the forefront of the world’s decision-making bodies and contribute significantly to shaping the future of the African continent,” Dr Ali Said, a seasoned Somali lawmaker stated.

Raila needs votes from all 55 member states to win the seat. The former Prime Minister claims that six Heads of State have already expressed support for his candidacy.

These include William Ruto (Kenya), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), Salva Kiir (South Sudan), Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa) and Felix Tshisekedi (DRC).

He mentioned that he planned to engage in discussions with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda in the upcoming week to secure his support.

“Next week I will meet Kagame, Mama Suluhu has said she will support me, and Salva Kiir has accepted. The other day I was with Ramaphosa, he said yes, Tshisekedi has said yes,” he stated during a rally in Kisii on Thursday, February 29.
