Somalia Unveils New Strategy to Stop Raila’s March to Top AU Job

On Saturday, March 23, the Federal Republic of Somalia made it evident that it had no intention of withdrawing Fawzia Yusuf Adam from the candidacy for Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

Following Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s appointment of an 8-person committee tasked with devising a strategy and advocating for Fawzia’s candidacy to outmaneuver Azimio Leader Raila Odinga, who is also vying for the same position.

In this aspect, the team consists of two special representatives and six members of the organizing committee selected from prominent government institutions.

“The Prime Minister saw the need to appoint a Special Envoy in charge of the Election Campaign for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, 2025-2028, which will be represented by MP Fawzia Yusuf X. Adam, in Somalia,” Barre explained why the nation was not backing down.

The pair selected as special envoys were Daoud Aweys Jama, who serves as the Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, and Ismail Jimale Alasow.

“The two envoys are in charge of the relationship between the governments of the need for support while carrying out the duties assigned to the Election Campaign Committee for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission,” it was explained.

Conversely, individuals on the ministerial committee tasked with coordinating the election campaign for the AUC comprise Bihi Cige, Daoud Aweys Jama, Abdirisaq Omar Mohammed, Abdullahi Ahmed Jama, Abdisalan Abdi Ali, and Ali Mohamed Omar.

The Prime Minister stated that Somalia recognized the significance of joining the competition, leading to the need for appointments.

Furthermore, Barre mentioned that he had taken into account the significance of AUC and enhanced the Government of Somalia’s involvement in both national and regional bodies affiliated with the African Union.

“The members of the above-mentioned Committee are instructed to speed up the assigned tasks as soon as possible and bring them to completion,” it was directed. 

Several hours following Somalia’s declaration of their plan, Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, expressed remorse over the potential impact of Kenya Kwanza and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members on Raila Odinga’s candidacy.

“Please let us take this issue of the AUC chairmanship more seriously than we are taking it. It is in our national interest that is my plea to you,” he warned the politicians. 

Leaders from various political factions across the nation have thrown their support behind Raila’s candidacy.
