Silent Uasin Gishu Rep Gladys Shollei Speaks on Finland Scholarship Scandal
Monday, Gladys Boss Shollei, the woman representative for Uasin Gishu, broke her silence regarding the Finland Scholarship Scandal after her constituents questioned her silence on the matter that has sparked a national political tempest.
During an interview with Spice FM, the former Chief Registrar of the Judiciary explained her previous silence, stating that she had refrained from commenting on the issue due to her limited familiarity with the specifics and her ignorance of the program initiated by the administration of Jackson Mandago.
“I remained deliberately silent because I was aware of what had transpired. “When I inquired about what transpired, I did not receive credible information from the appropriate parties,” she explained.
“I presume they are scholarships when a governor announces them. It never occurred to me that it wasn’t true, even in my fondest dreams,” she added.
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly argued that she witnessed numerous fundraisers being held throughout the county but did not investigate because she believed the program was a legitimate initiative by the county government to grant scholarships to needy students from across the vast county.
“Only the former governor and his predecessor are aware of the situation. Since they have access to the accounts, they should have steered us in the right direction,” the boss added.

In addition, she accused Mandago of failing to implement a coherent framework and failing to notify parents of the financial obligations they would be required to fulfill after the students traveled to Finland for the program.
The representative distanced herself from Mandago’s program, insisting that her own initiative to empower Uasin Gishu residents was distinct.
Regarding the matter, Shollei suggested that the funds be returned to the parents and that the program be terminated to prevent further financial losses.
“The county must devise a plan to assist those already in Finland, and the program should not be revisited until a clear operational framework has been established,” she remarked.
After the conclusion of the investigations, the boss reaffirmed her stance that the guilty parties should face legal repercussions.
Senator Mandago was released on August 17 after posting a Ksh2 million surety or a Ksh500,000 cash bail. Senator Mandago was arrested in connection with the fraud.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is anticipated to issue a comprehensive report in due course as investigations continue.
