Shock as man abducted from Nairobi CBD in broad daylight

A man in his middle years was forcefully abducted on Monday evening along Nairobi’s Moi Avenue, echoing a series of state-related kidnappings that have occurred since June.

The victim, dressed in a grey suit, was walking from Jevanjee Gardens towards Imenti House.

Just a few meters from his destination, two men suddenly appeared and seized him without offering any identification. A woman and a driver inside a grey Volkswagen SUV accompanied them.

Despite his cries for help, bystanders remained passive, with only a few recording the incident on their phones.

The man, while resisting, attempted to give his phone to a boda boda rider, but his captors quickly intercepted and took the phone away.

“He gave me his phone to contact his wife, but the men took it and claimed to be police officers,” said Kevin Kamau, the boda boda rider, in a statement.

The Volkswagen SUV then sped off towards Jevanjee Gardens.

Another boda boda rider, Caleb Onyango, who witnessed the event, stated the man appeared to be heading home after work, though no one recognized him.

When contacted, Hosea Manwa, a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) council, mentioned the group’s willingness to assist the man’s family in locating him and securing his release.

“If a family is missing a loved one since Monday, they should reach out, and we will provide legal support,” he said.

    Series of Abductions

Since mid-June, several individuals have been taken by people suspected to be law enforcement officers and have been detained without contact.

However, President William Ruto has repeatedly denied the existence of state-sponsored kidnappings under the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNCHR) recently criticized the president’s denial of knowledge regarding police-related abductions.

KNCHR has documented 66 disappearances, with many tied to the Gen Z protests.

Three activists from Kitengela, Kajiado County, abducted on August 9, remain missing. The three include Jamil Longton Hashim, his brother Aslam Longton, and activist Bob Michemi Njagi, who were taken while traveling to a party in Isinya, Kajiado County.

Acting Inspector-General of Police Gilbert Masengeli was held in contempt of court for not appearing to provide information on their whereabouts.

He is scheduled for sentencing on Friday.
