Shakahola Death Toll Soars to 372 as 12 More Bodies Unearthed
In the ongoing search for victims of a suspected starvation cult, twelve additional bodies have been unearthed at the Shakahola forest in Kilifi County.
This brings the current death toll to 372 as phase four of the exhumation process commenced earlier this week.
Coast Regional Commissioner, Rhoda Onyancha, revealed on Wednesday that no new arrests have been made in connection with the deaths, keeping the total number of arrests at 37.
Onyancha further provided an update on the progress of the operation, stating that 95 individuals have been rescued thus far.
Additionally, a total of 253 DNA samples have been collected, aiding in the identification and verification process.
The efforts to recover the remains and gather evidence will continue on Thursday, following an announcement by Interior Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who expressed expectations of finding more bodies in the 40 recently identified graves.
The suspected cult is believed to be associated with Pastor Paul Mackenzie, a controversial figure from the Good News International Church.
Pastor Mackenzie stands accused of manipulating his followers and indoctrinating them into believing that they must starve themselves to death to “meet Jesus.” As of now, Mackenzie remains in police custody as the investigation progresses.

The discovery of these additional bodies serves as a grim reminder of the extent of the tragedy and the influence that the cult had over its members.
The authorities are working diligently to unravel the full scope of the cult’s activities and provide justice for the victims.
The exhumation process, although challenging and emotionally taxing, is a crucial step in piecing together the evidence necessary for a thorough investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The involvement of the Coast Regional Commissioner signifies the gravity of the situation, highlighting the commitment of the local authorities to address this shocking incident.
The lack of new arrests at this stage suggests that the focus has shifted toward gathering evidence against the individuals already in custody.
The collected DNA samples will play a pivotal role in identifying the recovered bodies and potentially linking them to the victims’ families.
As the search continues, it is crucial to ensure the well-being and support of the survivors who have been rescued from the clutches of the cult.
These individuals will require extensive physical and psychological rehabilitation to help them recover from the traumatic experiences they endured while under the influence of the cult.
The case has garnered significant attention and sparked nationwide discussions on the role of religious institutions, mental health, and the vulnerability of individuals susceptible to manipulation and coercion.

As the investigations progress and more details emerge, it is hoped that justice will be served, and measures will be put in place to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
The authorities, in collaboration with mental health professionals and religious organizations, must work together to educate the public, raise awareness, and provide support networks to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals within society.
