Shakahola Cult: Gov’t Suspends Exhumation as 8 More Bodies Found

On Thursday, eight more bodies were dug up at the Shakahola forest in Kilifi County, which is where the search for victims of a suspected starvation cult led by controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie is continuing. The cult was believed to have been led by Mackenzie.

Due to preparations for the post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday of the following week, the government has decided to suspend the exhumation exercise, even though the number of victims has increased as a direct result of the tragedy and now stands at 235.

Rhoda Onyancha, the Coast Regional Commissioner. Made the announcement stating that only the search and rescue operations will proceed as scheduled.

She said that the rescuers were able to pull four people out of the cave. With one of them being in critical condition. At this point, there have been a total of 89 people pulled from the water and to safety.

At the same time, the Regional Commissioner made note of the fact that two additional people had their disappearances reported. Bringing the total number of reported missing people to 613.

It is believed that the pastor of Good News International Church, Mackenzie, is connected to the alleged cult. Mackenzie is accused of brainwashing his congregation into believing that they must starve themselves to death to “meet Jesus.”

Even though he has denied the allegations that have been leveled against him, Mackenzie is still on trial and remains in custody.
