Governors Sakaja and Kihika Face Arrest for Ignoring Summons

The governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, and his counterpart in Nakuru, Susan Kihika, face arrest after ignoring summonses from a Senate oversight committee to respond to audit inquiries regarding the use of public funds in their respective counties.

The County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee has stated that they will seek arrest warrants for the two if they fail to respond to the summonses.

The failure of Governor Sakaja to appear before the committee led by Senator Godfrey Osotsi of Vihiga on May 15 to respond to audit questions regarding the use of funds by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company. He reported being out of the country.

Ms. Khika was to appear before the committee today. To answer questions about the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Company’s use of funds. But she sent a letter excusing herself for the third time.

Mr. Osotsi stated, while delivering his ruling. That they have summoned the two county chiefs to appear before them. Failing which they will seek the assistance of the police to ensure that they comply with the summons.

He stated they will not permit governors to use international travel as an excuse to ignore committee invitations.

“We order that the governors be summoned to appear before this committee on a date to be communicated by the Clerk; if they fail to do so, we will seek an arrest warrant.”
We will not tolerate continued disdain for our committees, said Mr. Osotsi.

The lawmaker stated that the two governors must provide proof that they were outside the country. At the time in question.
