Senators Demand the Summoning of Ruto

Kenyan senators are pushing for President William Ruto to be summoned by the Speakers of both Houses to provide proof of his recent bribery claims against lawmakers.

The senators said Ruto’s remarks, made during a Kenya Kwanza–ODM meeting in Karen on Monday, cast doubt on the integrity of Parliament and risk damaging public trust in devolution.

Speaking during a Public Accounts Committee session chaired by Senator Moses Kajwang’ and attended by Senator Edwin Sifuna, the lawmakers condemned the President’s statement, arguing it amounted to painting all elected leaders as corrupt.

They demanded that Ruto table evidence—whether intelligence reports, witness statements, or official documents—to support his claims. Without this, they warned, Parliament’s reputation would be left in ruins.

“Article 125 gives us the power to summon any person, including the President, if they accuse MPs of unethical behavior,” said Kajwang’. “The Speakers must compel him to explain these claims. We cannot allow unverified allegations to pass without scrutiny.”

During his address on Monday, a visibly angry Ruto said he had credible intelligence showing that MPs and Senators were taking bribes to influence key parliamentary decisions. He even claimed that one senator pocketed Ksh150 million to sway a House matter, though he declined to name the individual.

The President further vowed that leaders found guilty of soliciting or receiving bribes would be arrested and prosecuted.

But senators fired back, insisting that making such serious accusations in public rallies instead of through institutions like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), or Parliament itself only weakens the credibility of the legislature.

“He must come out and clearly state who is giving and receiving these bribes,” Kajwang’ added. “Parliament cannot be tried in a kangaroo court.”

The lawmakers stressed that Parliament is a key pillar of democracy and cannot afford to be tainted by unverified, sweeping corruption claims.
