Senator Mounts Pressure on DPP Ingonga to Resign Over Rex Masai’s Case

Makueni Senator Daniel Maanzo criticized Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga for his conclusions on the murder of Rex Masai, who was killed during the initial anti-government protests on June 20.

During a funeral on Saturday, Maanzo accused the DPP of unprofessional conduct, leaving the deceased’s family with unanswered questions.

The funeral was for another protest victim, Alex Muteti, where politicians suggested that if the DPP was compromised, he should resign and let the President appoint a capable successor.

Maanzo highlighted the significance of the DPP’s office, urging resignation if compromised by the government, stressing the need for justice for Kenyans.

He criticized the DPP’s call for witnesses to provide information, seeing it as a sign of incompetence.

The Senator claimed the DPP knew the suspects but hesitated to recommend arrests.

Maanzo insisted that Ingonga’s office must ensure justice for all killed during the protests.

He warned the President that Alex’s blood was on his hands, urging Parliament to convene and dismiss the DPP for failing to ensure justice for affected families and the nation.

On Tuesday, the DPP revealed that CCTV footage of Masai’s shooting did not identify the shooter, complicating the investigation.

Masai was one of at least 40 Kenyans killed since the protests began on June 18, with others injured, arrested, or abducted.

On the day of Masai’s death, a large group of young Kenyans protested in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) at night.

A plain-clothed man, suspected to be an officer, was seen firing at the protestors, hitting Rex, who later died while awaiting treatment at a local hospital.

His family demanded justice, accusing the government of a cover-up after the DPP’s statement.
