Senator Cherargei Calls for Discipline of Kenya Kwanza MPs Opposing Finance Bill

Members of Parliament affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition who oppose President William Ruto’s directives risk disciplinary action, according to Senator Samson Cherargei of Nandi.

Friday at a function in Maraba, Tinderet Constituency, the outspoken senator urged Kenya Kwanza legislators to make the President’s life easier by supporting his plans in the House.

Cherargei cited the recent vote during the introduction of the proposed Finance Bill, 2023 in Parliament on Wednesday; the bill passed the Second Reading stage with 176 in favor and 81 opposed.

Despite being a member of the President Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza coalition that supported the Bill, Gathoni Wamuchomba, a representative from Githunguri, opposed it.

The Nandi senator then warned that anyone who opposed the position of the ruling political party would be dealt with accordingly.

“Nimeona watu wengine wanasema ooh, wale watu walivote upande huu, wengine ule…We have no issues, but we must maintain party positions,” he stated.

“If the party has directed you to make a certain decision, if you do not follow party position…if you were elected by UDA party supporters, you are a UDA party member, and you do not wish to vote according to UDA, you will be subject to the law.”

He added: “Tunataka order; tunataka Rais akisema Yes, wote tunasema Yes, akisema jump, tunauliza, Your Excellency, how high can we jump? Akisema enda left, tunaenda left, akisema enda right, we go right. Kwa sababu sisi ni watu wa kazi, UDA, Kenya Kwanza, na hii ndiyo serikali iko kwa sasa.”

According to the Senator, Kenya Kwanza-affiliated legislators must adhere to the decisions of the government and their leader.

Cherargei’s remarks follow similar statements made by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leadership on Thursday, in which 28 of its members face disciplinary action for either failing to appear or voting in favor of the bill against the party’s position.

The contentious bill will now be considered clause by clause in the House Committee on the Whole.
