Senator Calls for Controller of Budget Resignation Over Shocking Ksh 1 B Salary Scandal
Senator Aaron Cheruiyot of Kericho has demanded the resignation of Controller of Budget Margret Nyakang’o in response to her incriminating revelations, in which she claimed that the salaries of high-ranking state officials were more than Ksh1 billion overbought.
Cheruiyot stated before the National Dialogue Committee (NDC) that the CoB’s admission of failure amounts to an admission of failure, given that State officers are obligated to obtain authorization from her office before executing substantial withdrawals, such as those necessary to facilitate salary disbursements.
”We should have asked her to resign because if you are allowing withdrawals through what is being revealed to the Committee, as budgeted corruption then it means either, you are incompetent or you are part and parcel of those that are stealing from us,” the Senator posed.
The Senator from Kericho addressed the Committee while CS Njuguna Ndung’u, the Treasury CS, was answering queries regarding the present condition of the Kenyan economy.
Additionally, CS Ndung’u defended the government against criticism regarding the depreciation of the Shilling by attributing the decline to several factors.

Nyakang’o, who testified before the NDC last week, conveyed significant apprehensions regarding the magnitude of premeditated corruption within the government. She disclosed that her personal salary had been allocated three times the amount she actually earns.
“When I was doing the budget for consolidated funds services, this is where my salary is paid from, I found out that my salary was budgeted at three times what I’m paid,” Nyakang’o stated.
“I am the only state office in my institution. So, there’s nothing like confusion there; I am all alone. So, I asked them why is the budget showing three times. I have not received the answer,” she told the committee.
Additionally, the Controller of Budget disclosed that the estimated budget for her office was Ksh18.6 million, which significantly deviates from the reality of her yearly salary of Ksh9.51 million.
The Controller of Budget additionally disclosed that the Treasury had estimated the costs for the Office of the Deputy President and the Office of the President at Ksh42.4 million, an amount that is Ksh10 million higher than the originally budgeted amount of Ksh32.05 million.
In addition, the CoB raised the red flag by disclosing that Ksh1.5 billion in state officer remuneration in the 2023/2024 budget was grossly inconsistent.
