“Say Sorry to Gen Z or Step Down” — Ex-NFL Star Calls Out Ruto Over Killings, Kidnappings, and Internet Shutdowns
Kenyan leaders, including President William Ruto, are facing growing calls to apologise to Generation Z over reports of kidnappings, enforced disappearances, and killings that took place during last year’s protests.
Rickey Allen Bolden, a former NFL player turned pastor from the United States, made the emotional appeal at the National Prayer Breakfast held on Wednesday, May 28. Bolden urged leaders from both sides of the political divide to reach out to the youth, seek forgiveness, and rebuild trust.
Speaking at the event, Bolden said, “I pray that leaders will say sorry to Gen Z for the detentions and shutting down of the internet. These young people respect you—but they don’t feel respected in return.”
He added, “When we talk about healing relationships, wouldn’t it be powerful if leaders stood up and said, ‘We detained you, we caused you trauma, and we are sorry’?”
Bolden highlighted that Gen Z is eager to be involved in shaping the future of Kenya—but they want respect, acknowledgment, and genuine inclusion from the nation’s leaders.

His remarks come in the wake of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests led by young Kenyans. These protests quickly turned into a larger movement challenging President Ruto’s leadership. Unfortunately, many Gen Z protesters became victims of violent crackdowns.
Even after the demonstrations, frustrations continued online. Some youth used AI to create satirical images of President Ruto. Shortly after, several of those involved were reportedly abducted or went missing. While many were later released, a few were found dead—sparking national and international outrage.
Earlier this year, President Ruto, during a joint appearance with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, promised to end illegal arrests and abductions. This statement was viewed by many as a quiet admission of the previously denied kidnappings.
Rickey Bolden, who delivered the keynote address, is known worldwide for his motivational talks on leadership, integrity, and faith. Once an offensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns, Bolden’s professional football career ended due to injury. He later became a respected pastor based in Dallas, Texas.
