Safaricom CEO’s Police Bodyguard Charged with Cold-Blooded Murder in Bar Brawl Horror

A police officer assigned to protect Safaricom CEO has been charged with murder after a deadly bar fight in Ruaraka.

Officer Arraigned in Court Ezekiel Kipkoech Tarus appeared before Justice James Wakiaga at the Milimani Court on Tuesday. He was officially charged with the murder of Raphael Kimuli Wambua, a police officer from the Central Bank of Kenya.

What Happened? According to prosecutors, the incident happened on February 23, 2025. Raphael Kimuli and his brother, Erick Ngolania Wambua, were at Wasafi Bar watching football and drinking. Erick is also a police officer stationed at the GSU headquarters.

At around 1:20 a.m., as they were leaving the bar, they were confronted by Tarus. He allegedly shot Raphael Kimuli using his Jericho pistol (serial number 44338440).

After the Shooting After the shooting, an angry crowd attacked Tarus. Police from Ruaraka station arrived and rushed him to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.

Bail Application and Court Ruling Tarus, represented by lawyers Danstan Omari and Shadrack Wambui, asked for bail. They argued that he would follow all court orders and that there were no reasons to keep him in custody.

Initially, the prosecution wanted Tarus to be detained for 14 days for further investigation. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided that he should face murder charges immediately.

Bail Conditions Tarus denied the charges and was granted a cash bail of Ksh.500,000 with a surety of the same amount. The court also ruled that:

    • He must not contact any witnesses.
    • He must report to the investigating officer every Thursday until the case is concluded.

Next Court Date The case will be heard on May 20, 2025.
