Sabina Chege Loses Deputy Minority Whip Role As Jubilee Court Battle Rages

Sabina Chege, a nominated member of Parliament, lost her position as Deputy Minority Whip in the National Assembly on Monday.

On Monday, a Kiambu Court dismissed Chege’s lawsuit challenging Azimio la Umoja’s decision to remove her from her position.

Consequently, Mark Muriithi Mwenje will be the new Deputy Minority Whip for the thirteenth parliament.

“We now demand that the Speaker, Moses Wetangula ratifies the decision to allow Hon. Mark Mwenje to serve,” a statement by Jubilee Party read in part.

Jubilee Party has been embroiled in a protracted legal battle over leadership, with the faction headed by Chege battling the faction led by Uhuru for control of the party and millions of shillings.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has indicated that he will not leave the party, maintaining critical positions for his allies despite the fallout with Chege and Kanini Kega, who have since joined Kenya Kwanza.

Azimio attempted to replace Chege on May 4, but Wetangula halted the attempt because the coalition had not provided the House with a replacement.

“The communication received from the Minority Party on the decision to oust Sabina Chege is incomplete and therefore does not comply with the requirements of Standing Order 20(A) of the National Assembly,” Wetangula ruled then.

Azimio subsequently nominated the MP for Embakasi West, but Chege, through her attorney Dennis Kivuti, objected to her removal in court.

“Pending hearing and determination of the case, the Honorable Court be pleased to issue such further or other order(s) as it may deem just and expedient for the end of justice,” the court ruled in June

Following this decision, Speaker Wetangula stated that Chege would continue to carry out her responsibilities until the courts rendered a final decision on the matter.

“Honourable members from the foregoing, my hands are tied about the court order that has been brought to my attention,” he stated then.
