Ruto’s Bold Move: Appointing General Ogolla Amidst Electoral Dispute

President William Ruto has shed light on the reasons why he appointed Lieutenant General Francis Omondi Ogolla as the new Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), a decision that he says went against the opinion of many people.

President William Ruto has explained his decision to appoint Lieutenant General Francis Omondi Ogolla as the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), which he claims was contrary to the opinion of many.

Ruto stated during a joint interview with the media on Sunday from State House that he had been advised not to appoint General Ogolla due to allegations that he was part of the team that attempted to overturn his presidential victory in September 2022.

Ruto stated that despite this, his qualifications outweighed his past actions, and he was the most qualified candidate for the position.

“General Ogolla was among those who traveled to Bomas in an attempt to overturn my victory, but after reviewing his resume, I concluded that he was the most qualified candidate for the position of general. “Many aspects of my system outweighed what he had done,” he stated.

Additionally, he clarified that he is eager to make deliberate appointments and that his decisions are not influenced by an individual’s affiliation if they have a stellar record.

People believe I chose Ogolla because he was the deputy CDF, but this is not true. I made the choice deliberately and against the advice of many people.”

In addition, he implied that, before the appointment, he met with Ogolla, who admitted to attempting to undermine the presidential victory.

Ruto stated that during the aforementioned meeting, he made it clear that he will still appoint him due to his exceptional qualifications.

“I summoned him and seated him. I told him, “My friend, you went to Bomas to try to overturn my victory, but because you are the most qualified candidate for general, I will appoint you.” This is how it works for me,” he stated.

“He told me, ‘I have no defense; do whatever you want with me. What I did was incorrect. Yes, this gentleman may have made a mistake because the commander-in-chief at the time ordered him to do so.

General Ogolla assumed control on April 29, succeeding General Robert Kariuki Kibochi, whose term had expired.

He served as Vice Chief of the Defense Forces (VCDF) before his appointment.
