Ruto will be fine without Mt Kenya Support – Mutahi Ngunyi
Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has made a bold assertion, suggesting that President William Ruto could thrive politically even without the support of the Mt Kenya region. According to Ngunyi, if the influential region withdraws its support for Ruto, the rest of the nation might rally behind the incumbent.
Ngunyi cautioned that the Mt Kenya region’s abandonment of Ruto could lead to broader national support for the president. He emphasized this point, stating, “Dear Kikuyus, you can unite as much as you want at Limuru3. But the 43 tribes of Kenya can also be behind Ruto without you,” during an interview on X.
Furthermore, Ngunyi criticized the Mt Kenya region, labeling it as “unreliable and ungrateful.” He attributed this characterization to his belief that Ruto had been warned previously that “you cannot buy a Kikuyu, you can only rent one.”
These remarks by Ngunyi came in the aftermath of the Limuru III meeting held on Friday. The slogan “You cannot buy a Kikuyu, you can only rent one” was notably prevalent among supporters of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) from the Mt Kenya region in 2021.

In response to this slogan at the time, Ruto denounced it as regressive. He claimed it was being utilized by a faction of politicians who had lost grassroots support and were seeking to foster tribal divisions among Kenyans.
Meanwhile, the Limuru III meeting convened various professionals, business figures, and religious representatives from the Mt. Kenya region to deliberate on the region’s trajectory. During the gathering, it was decided to maintain former President Uhuru Kenyatta as the region’s primary political figure to guide their path leading up to the 2027 General Election.
Among those present at the meeting were prominent leaders such as Martha Karua, Jeremiah Kioni, Gathoni Wamuchomba, Ndiritu Muriithi, and Ferdinand Waititu. The leaders affirmed their commitment to recognizing Uhuru Kenyatta as the paramount figure in the Mt Kenya region until he formally relinquishes his influence.
Furthermore, the leaders urged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru to organize a meeting to establish a consensus on the region’s political direction for the forthcoming elections.
