Ruto Takes Action Against Churches for Shakahola Massacre.

As a result of the Shakahola massacre, which resulted in the exhumation of more than 100 bodies, President William Ruto issued a stern warning to religious leaders on April 30.

Ruto stated during a church service at Makutano Stadium in Kapenguria, West Pokot County, that a framework to rein in unscrupulous pastors was being developed in collaboration with spiritual leaders.

“I will consult with all religious leaders in the country to form a task force to weed out those who wish to abuse religion to run anti-religious businesses and activities in Kenya.

“We wish to provide a framework on which our religious leaders can agree. The Head of State announced a framework that will provide for self-regulation so that churches and spiritual leaders will have a mechanism to report to the government those who wish to abuse religion for other purposes.

On Monday, May 6, 2019, Paul Mackenzie Nthenge will appear before the chief magistrate’s court in Malindi.

In addition, he stated that he would establish a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the Shakahola massacre within the next week.

“We believe in God as Christians. Some use religion and other destructive methods to harm others.

“To ensure that what occurred in Shakahola will never occur again, we are establishing a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to determine what occurred in Shakahola with (pastor Paul) Mackenzie and all of his accomplices,” he said.

The president also confirmed that the new relocation would coincide with the transfer of all Kilifi County commissioners.

“Recently, we transferred all commissioners from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) who were lax in their duties. “Therefore, I will appoint the commission this week to prevent a repeat of the events at Shakahola,” he stated.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced a reshuffle of police chiefs on Friday, April 28, to pave the way for investigations into how such heinous acts occurred under their watch.

Kindiki declared, “We will replace them with their counterparts from elsewhere to demonstrate to the public that what we are doing is for the good of the country and the good of justice.”

The death toll currently stands at 110, with 32 bodies recovered from the forest.
