Ruto Storms MT. Kenya, Shames Gachagua Loyalists as Rebels Scramble to Switch Sides
President William Ruto received a grand welcome as he began his weeklong tour of the Mt. Kenya region. Thousands of residents from Laikipia and Nyeri lined up to greet him, many dressed in traditional Kikuyu attire. The warm reception came despite months of political tensions following the removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Strong Support in Nyeri County
During his visit to Nyeri County, President Ruto assured residents that he had not forgotten their role in his election victory. He emphasized that his administration would prioritize development in the region.
“Your votes helped us form this government. Do you think I would forget? I will ensure your roads are built, electricity is installed, water projects are completed, and markets are constructed,” Ruto stated.
His deputy, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, criticized politicians who spread division among citizens. โSome people wake up every morning just to incite the public,” he remarked.
Accusations Against Gachagua
President Ruto accused his former deputy of promoting tribalism and division. “No one should tell you there is a plot to discriminate against anyone. Politics of hatred, tribalism, and exclusion are over in Kenya,” he declared.
Prof. Kindiki also distanced himself from those advising him against working with the president, saying, “I am not available for that. I am focused on my job.”
Political Shifts in Mt. Kenya
Some leaders who previously supported Gachagua, including Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, signaled a change of allegiance. They expressed willingness to work with Rutoโs administration.
“We missed you for a while. We wondered why you were not visiting. Isnโt this our government? Should we just watch others enjoy its benefits?” Kahiga asked.
MP Wainaina echoed the sentiment, saying, “A guest has arrived, and the host is happy. Are you responding as we agreed?”
Major Development Projects Launched
Earlier in the day, President Ruto launched several key projects in Laikipia and Nyeri. These included:
- Affordable housing projects
- Markets worth over Ksh.1 billion
- A Ksh.720 million rural electrification project in Laikipia
- A pledge to connect 10,000 households to electricity in Nyeri
The presidentโs visit marks a strategic move to solidify his support in Mt. Kenya, a region crucial to his political base. As he continues his tour, all eyes will be on how local leaders respond to his outreach efforts.
