Ruto Speaks Out After Leaders Clash on Abductions, Extrajudicial Killings in Bungoma
On Friday, January 3, President William Ruto affirmed his commitment to ensuring accountability for those involved in abductions. Speaking during the burial of Moses Wetangula’s mother in Bungoma County, where leaders debated the recent spate of abductions, the President emphasized that his administration would not tolerate extrajudicial killings.
Ruto assured the public that law enforcement, led by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, understood their responsibilities in addressing the matter. He stressed that investigative agencies would be supported to carry out their duties independently.
“We have been very clear—every instance of criminal behavior must be investigated, whether it involves ordinary citizens, criminals, or even the police,” Ruto stated. “Anyone found guilty must face the legal consequences. The IG, Deputy IG, and the DPP are fully aware of their mandates, and we will continue to support their independent operations.”

The event also saw heated exchanges between Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya regarding the abductions. Ichung’wah suggested that some politicians were orchestrating these incidents to tarnish President Ruto’s administration.
Governor Natembeya, on the other hand, expressed concern about the rising cases of missing and murdered children. “It is disheartening for anyone to claim that people are abducting or killing themselves,” he said. “Our children are disappearing and losing their lives, and this is a serious issue.”
Ichung’wah countered by urging Natembeya, a former regional commissioner, to provide any information about the abductors to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for proper action. He emphasized the importance of addressing the matter through evidence and investigations, rather than making unsupported claims.
The exchanges highlighted the urgency of tackling abductions and ensuring justice for victims while holding those responsible accountable under the law.
