Ruto Shuts Down State House Bar

President William Ruto has removed the State House bar, which previously served alcoholic beverages.

Friday afternoon, city attorney Donald Kipkorir announced the news via Twitter.

Kipkorir explained in a Twitter thread that he requested a glass of wine during his Thursday visit to State House but was informed that the bar was no longer operational.

“Yesterday, President William Ruto invited me to State House. I was joined by my friend Attorney General Hon. JB Muturi.

“We reminisced over our friendship that goes back to 1992. I asked for a glass of wine & he told me he pulled down the bar that was there. I was given delicious short ribs without wine! It was a humbling experience meeting the President & repairing our friendship,” Kipkorir wrote.

This move comes just days after former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko advised Ruto to imbibe before making major decisions.

Sonko cited 1 Timothy 5:23, which states that a small amount of wine is beneficial to the stomach. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the President is a devout abstainer.

During Kipkorir’s visit, Ruto reportedly discussed his plans to transform Kenya through the Asian Tigers and to strengthen bilateral relations with them.

Kipkorir also urged him to adopt the 5.0 Economic Plan of Thailand. According to Kipkorir, Ruto inquired about his mother, who is battling stomach cancer, and his hometown, Cheptongei.

“President William Ruto also informed me of his vision to transform the country in line with the Asian Tigers & that he was going to strengthen our bilateral relations with them. I implored him to also emulate Thailand’s 5.0 Economic Plan.
“Then in a one-on-one with him, the President inquired about the health of my mother who has stomach cancer. He also asked about my village Cheptongei, ” he wrote.

Ruto’s decision to close the State House bar is unclear, but he may be attempting to distance himself from alcohol consumption.

Alcohol consumption has been a contentious issue among Kenyan politicians, with some advocating for the prohibition of alcohol in government offices.
