Ruto Puts Brakes on Salary Hike: Halts SRC’s Plan

Friday, June 30, President William Ruto halted plans by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to increase his and his deputy’s salaries.

Ruto directed SRC, during a speech at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), to develop an internationally recognized system to reduce the disparity in civil servant salaries.

“I’ve informed SRC that there is a globally accepted formula known as compression formula. Our salary increase will be withheld until I hear back from them that they’ve met the criteria.”

“But for the other individuals, the state officers, myself, my deputy, ministers, PSs, MPs, and so on. This salary would remain unchanged. Ruto ordered that the status quo continue until the SRC provides us with international best practices to close the gap.

Ruto stated, in defending the measure, that it will bring uniformity to the public service by addressing instances in which some civil servants earn ten times more than others.

Ruto expressed concern regarding the current public service remuneration system, indicating that some university vice-chancellors and parastatal managing directors earn more than he does.

Thus, the Head of State ordered SRC to explain in a detailed report why they deserve such a high salary.

For the fiscal year 2024/25, the SRC proposed increasing Ruto’s salary by Ksh206,260. According to the proposal, Ruto’s salary would increase from Ksh1,443,750 to Ksh1,650,000.

The monthly salary of his deputy was anticipated to increase to Ksh1,402,500 from its current level of Ksh1,367,438.

According to the proposal, Chief Justice Martha Koome’s salary would reach Ksh1,403,944 beginning in 2024, placing her among the highest earners in the country.

In 2024, the monthly salary of Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu would reach Ksh1,304,185, minus allowances.

Ruto, on the other hand, defended pay raises for other civil servants, arguing that it will protect them from economic downturns.
