Ruto Opts for Suit at KDF Day Celebrations Deviating From Uhuru Tradition

President William Ruto wore a naval blue suit on Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Day in 2023, in contrast to his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, who wore military regalia to the event on occasion.

The Commander-in-Chief donned a white shirt, a red tie, a maroon tie, and a black cap while officiating the ceremony at Embakasi Garrison in Nairobi County.

Ruto opted for a navy blue suit, white blouse, and purple tie for the 2022 celebrations held at Laikipia Air Base.

Consequently, since assuming office on September 13, 2022, the chief of state has not yet donned military regalia.

In contrast, Uhuru frequently donned a variety of military garb for KDF Days, including his final celebration on October 16, 2021.

Uhuru donned his first military uniform on September 5, 2014, when he visited the Archer’s Post in Samburu County and continued to do so for the duration of his mandates.

Kenyans grew accustomed to the red military uniform they donned for special occasions such as the Jamhuri Day celebration at Uhuru Gardens on December 12, 2021.

The motivation behind Uhuru’s decision to don military fatigues was his desire to identify with the military. It is important to note that the Commander in Chief is not required to don military attire during KDF events.

โ€œOur military is the best example of the mosaic that is our Kenyan nation. People from all walks of life are to be found in our military. Ethnicity and other sectarian interests are alien there.

“The President recognizes this exemplary role of our military and would want to be identified with it,โ€ former State House Spokesperson Manoa Esipisu explained to the media in 2014.

Ruto may be perceived as following in the footsteps of Kenya’s second president, Mwai Kibaki, who was never observed wearing KDF fatigues. Nonetheless, the incumbent is notorious for his affinity for Kaunda suits.

KDF Day is annually observed to honor the valor of KDF soldiers.

The first annual event was held in 2012, following the deployment of Kenyan soldiers to Somalia in October 2011 as part of Operation Linda Nchi.
