Ruto & East African Leaders Laud Uhuru’s Comprehensive DRC Report, Calling for United Action

On Wednesday, May 31, President William Ruto praised former President Uhuru Kenyatta for his role as an East African Community (EAC) mediator in the ceasefire witnessed in parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Ruto, speaking at the 21st Extraordinary Meeting of the Heads of State in Burundi, attributed the DRC’s peace to the role of various mediators in negotiating a ceasefire between the DRC government and the M23 rebels.

“We celebrate the two-month-old ceasefire and congratulate all the actors – the military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the East African force, and all the actors who have made it possible for us to have the ceasefire we all desired as a summit.

“We also celebrate the gradual return of civilian life to the eastern DRC, despite its challenges. Ruto cited Uhuru’s report to the regional leaders when he stated, “We can confidently say that there is a significant return of human life in Eastern DRC.”

The President also lauded the East African Regional Force (EACRF), led by Kenyan Major General Alphaxard Muthuri Kiugu, for restoring peace and order in M23-vacated areas.

In a communique, it was also stated that the EAC presidents were impressed by Uhuru’s facilitation of the EAC and therefore decided to adopt his report.

Uhuru has held numerous meetings with the DRC government and M23 officials, who met with him on January 12, 2023, in Nairobi.

In addition, the presidents instructed the Azimio la Umoja council chairman to continue coordinating with the M23 forces as they seek to restore peace to the nation at war.

It was also decided that Ruto would host the follow-up meeting at the State House in Nairobi, at which the Heads of State would be updated on the progress made by the facilitator and regional forces about the Burundi resolutions.

Shortly after handing over power to Ruto at Kasarani Stadium on September 13, 2022, Uhuru was named peace envoy for the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa.

Ruto appointed Uhuru as a special envoy due to his experience and prior participation in peace talks between the DRC and Ethiopia.

“On the peace initiatives in our region, including both Ethiopia and the Great Lakes Region, I have asked my elder brother, President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has done commendable engagement with those regions, and he has graciously agreed to continue chairing these discussions on behalf of the people of Kenya,” Ruto said at the time.
