Ruto Declares Kiabonyoru as the Location for Nyamira’s First University
President William Ruto has declared the creation of Nyamira County’s first university, set to be located in Kiabonyoru. This decision resolves the ongoing debate between North Mugirango, West Mugirango, Kitutu Masaba, and Borabu constituencies.
There has been significant debate over where the university should be situated, with various elected officials advocating for their preferred locations.
During his three-day development tour of the Gusii region, President Ruto addressed the pressure from North Mugirango residents and MP Joash Nyamoko by announcing the decision.
“MP Nyamoko has disclosed a key detail ahead of schedule. We were awaiting the formal procedure, but with this revelation, I had no choice. I will visit to review the university’s progress by year-end,” stated President Ruto.
He instructed Kisii University to initiate the establishment of Nyamira University in Kiabonyoru while he secured Sh500 million for its construction.
MP Nyamoko reminded the President of a previous commitment regarding the university, emphasizing that he was the only MP elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in 2022 and thus deserved this recognition.

Although Nyamoko anticipated a launch at Kiabonyoru High, West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka indicated that the university was not on the President’s schedule.
The debate over the university’s location has recently led to tensions among local leaders, including Nyamoko, Mogaka, and their counterparts from Borabu and Kitutu Masaba, Patrick Osero and Clive Gisairo, respectively.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has also been involved in the dispute, with each leader vying to have the university situated in their respective constituencies or political strongholds.
Potential locations for the university included Manga in Kitutu Masaba; Senator Kebaso Secondary School and Riakimai in West Mugirango; Ikonge and Kiamogake in North Mugirango; and Kiabonyoru, which borders North Mugirango and Borabu.
Kisii University, in collaboration with the Commission for University Education (CUE), is expected to support the establishment of Nyamira University.
The push for a university in Nyamira began during the tenure of the first governor, John Nyagarama. Kenya aims for every country to have its university, with Nyamira being one of the countries still lacking this educational institution.
