Ruto Announces Removal of Vetting During ID Application Before May
President William Ruto has declared the elimination of vetting in the National Identification Card (ID) application process.
During an Iftar Dinner held at State House on Monday, April 8, the Head of State mentioned that the elimination occurred in response to concerns raised by Muslim leaders, who characterized the procedure as discriminatory.
He claimed that it was essential for the nation to establish a singular procedure that would apply to all citizens of Kenya, regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations.
As per the President’s statement, the elimination of vetting will also be outlined in a forthcoming national policy currently being formulated by the federal government.
The new changes will be effected from the beginning of May.
“We have now completed the policy document and from the beginning of May this year, there will no longer be vetting for people who want to get IDs.

“I am going to be issuing a policy document to make sure that we have a mechanism for all Kenyans so that we do not discriminate based on region or religion,” he stated.
However, he insisted that the government would remain watchful to prevent criminals from exploiting the policy shift.
“We are still going to be vigilant in terms of security but that should not be a basis for people to be discriminated,” he asserted.
In the past, religious groups have voiced grievances about the screening procedures enforced on young individuals, particularly those hailing from northern regions of Kenya.
In the vetting phase, applicants typically need to demonstrate their Kenyan nationality before they can obtain their IDs.
Alternatively, the President mentioned his intention to officially recognize the Nubian Community through gazetting by year-end. He also acknowledged their efficient access to ID application services.
Furthermore, Ruto also warned schools against religious discrimination towards students, emphasizing that the government will promptly address any such instances in educational institutions.
