On Monday, President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome resolved their weeks-long dispute by reaching an understanding. They agreed to collaborate across the three branches of government to jointly combat corruption.

As per a communication from Statehouse Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, the meeting involved participation from all three branches of the government and resulted in the formulation of various conclusions.

It was acknowledged that corruption had infiltrated all three branches of the government, a sentiment echoed earlier by the Deputy President and other government officials.

“Corruption remains an existential threat to the nation which has permeated the three arms of Government, undermining our country’s tremendous development potential and sabotaging the much-needed transformation of our nation”, read the statement in part.

Additionally, the declaration states that each branch of the government must formulate policies and guidelines to enhance service delivery and combat corruption.

Furthermore, a consensus was reached stipulating that the three branches of government must present their proposals to the National Council of the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) within a 30-day deadline set during the gathering chaired by Her Ladyship the Chief Justice. This assembly is anticipated to serve as a plan outlining the actions to be taken in the short, medium, and long term.

Nevertheless, the Judiciary secured a victory as the Executive and Legislature demonstrated their commitment by augmenting financial assistance.

  • To streamline the appointment process for 25 more High Court Judges.
  • To expedite the recruitment of 11 additional Judges for the Court of Appeal.

Assets will be made available to effectively wrap up the vehicle leasing initiative, ensuring the fulfillment of the judiciary’s transportation requirements.

The Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary pledge to carry out their responsibilities in a way that upholds and advances the principles of the rule of law, institutional autonomy, and adherence to judicial rulings.

Significantly, the ceasefire follows escalating tensions between the Judiciary and the Executive, with a perception that the Executive was targeting the Judiciary.

The president had earlier pledged to disregard court orders in order to advance the government’s objectives, whereas Deputy President Gachagua had vowed to file a petition against Justice Esther Maina.
